Oni

Oni is a third person action adventure set in the future, 2032 to be exact. It is a Japanese inspired game, yet developed in Chicago by Rockstar games, the same people behind âSmugglers Runâ and âMidnight Clubâ also for PS2.

The game plays just like the âTomb Raiderâ series and âFear Effectâ on PS1, from the start of the game, you feel maybe not as excited. However once you have completed the first mission and youâve been thrown into the action you soon see that it is as exciting, with the potential to be better.

You are Konoko. A purple haired one woman SWAT team who is on her first field mission. As ever, things are not what they seem. Konoko works for TCTF (technology crimes task force) and was also brought up by them, she was orphaned at three years old; apparently.

As Konokoâs missions progress she soon finds that the syndicate ( the bad guys) are planning something, undoubtedly evil, but also her very identity is somehow questioned. Sound familiar?

There are 17 massive levels that have been designed by Architects using CAD programs, so as you can guess the levels look brilliant, and the scale is incredibly realistic. The mission locations range from warehouses and research centerâs to the local airport and police station.

Konoko has a lot of various unarmed moves which can at times prove more effective than a gun, as the game goes on, Konoko learns new and better moves and combos. The character animation is fast. On most games you can only do one thing at a time, having to wait for that animation to finish to instruct something else. Oni will let you, for example, in mid jump roll out and draw your weapon, all in one animation.

With a choice of ten weapons ranging from the âCampbell equalizerâ and âplasma rifleâ to the âscramâ and âscreaming cannonsâ, you get the sense that this girl can handle a lot of firepower, but can she? No. Konoko can only carry one weapon at a time. Bad in one way, good in another, this forces you to plan ahead. If you choose one weapon over another, and then run out of ammo a minute down the corridor, you turn back, for that gun that you didnât choose, but itâs gone.

Movements prove to be a bit complex. After a few hours of playing the game, you get the general idea though. They are handled by the analogue sticks. Left or the D-pad for movement and the right for orientation and elevation of view. R3 (push down right analogue stick to draw and holster weapon.) The right and left shoulder buttons are used for unarmed attacks and firing, as well as jumping/crouching. The famous X, circle, square and triangle operate such things as reloading, talking, opening doors and using your hypoâs, (which restores health.)

Features in the game are only really the Data Comlink. This basically is your inventory. It contains lists of all the moves you have learnt along side information on weapons and items as well as your mission objectives which are ever changing. Included is a diary recording recent events in Konokoâs own words, at times, this can be amusing.

Comments
I would recommend this game, the graphics are brilliant. The length of the game is very long and it can be extremely hard in places even on easy mode, but this just adds to the extremely gripping plot.
