Munch and Abe make the move to Microsofts camp, in one hot looking title.
Munch and Abeās move from PS2 to X Box has been well publicised, itās developers Oddworld Inhabitants have been very vocal on the reasons why, surely a sign of the X Box power over the PS2, well yes and no. If itās not up to scratch it could be devastating for Microsoft and X Box, thankfully itās shaping up to be very special indeed.
Munchā Odyssey follows the exploits of Munch and Abe. Munch has had a bad time; firstly breaking his leg in a bear trap, the luckless Gabbit was then abducted by soulless scientists, had an alien device implanted in his skull, and found out his race had been hunted to extinction, to top it all off heās being used as a lab rat and running about in a wheel chair.
Enter Abe, hero from the first two games and ready to rescue Munch from his tormentors, for that Abe asks Munch to follow him and help in his plight to rescue the Mudokon mom.
Munchā Odyssey plays exactly as the first two games except in three dimensions as opposed to two. From what Iāve played Munch must be up there alongside Mario 64 in terms of its seamless transition from 2D to 3D, itās all down to the camera control and thankfully Munchās never gets in the way.
Most of the game is based up of team-play activities, each character has different attributes and the key to solving the problems lies in using each of their skills cooperatively. One such example sees our two heroās blocked by a bunch (a big big bunch) of Sligs, despite being in a wheelchair Munch uses this to his advantage as he sets off down the hill whizzing through the bunch of bemused Sligs and ensuring they follow him to a closed environment allowing Abe free passage.
Like previous Oddworld outings Munch and Abe will be able to speak to other NPC, issuing the odd āHelloā or āFollow Meā. Fans of the series will know the importance of gamespeak, those who donāt; itās a form of communication for Munch and Abe to get other characters to do what you want.
Oddworld Inhabitants CEO Lorne Lanning gave a prime example during his pre-e3 presentation. Getting a dozen or so other Mudokonās to follow Abe and then attracting the attention of a nearby Slig, who after some taunting chases after Abe and into the waiting pack of Abeās mates where he is promptly beaten to a pulp much to everyoneās amusement. Lanning has stated that heād like Gamespeak to feature more predominantly in Munchā Odyssey, not much is known on how theyāll do this but it should be as fun as intuitive as the first two games.
Munch Odyssey has always looked stunning, when it was a PS2 title it was being used as a key title on their roster. The move to X Box has helped the team to turn the game into a visual masterpiece; the game now features true dynamic lighting, a first for console gaming, alongside that thereās bump mapping and reflection mapping whilst textures look superb throughout. Throughout the game thereās a fair amount on screen without any noticeable slowdown occurring and the animation on characters is the best Iāve seen. Munch is certainly a title to showcase the power of the X Box.
Things are looking good for Munch and Abe, from what Iāve played itās fun, entertaining and challenging, the way platform games should be on next-gen machines, with the looks to boot surely nothing can stop Munchā success of the X Box.
