NFL 2000

Every now and then, there comes a game that changes history, it makes other games look like poo. It is a game that starts a new revolution in video gaming.

Visual Concepts has truly lived up to all the hype of this game. I mean think about it. In 1997, a company that most of you have never heard of, starts making a game for this next generation system named, Dreamcast. This company has developed for EA before, but there not exactly a safe bet for developing games. All of a sudden, E3 comes around. People start looking around at the various booths and they see VC showing off a football game. Whos this they might have thought. Well it's VC, and they are showing off the most impressive Football game ever. Ooo, the game has great graphics, but can it play in the big leagues? That was a question many asked while waiting for that o so special dreamcast launch. But now that it is out all questions have been answered. This game is the new revolution. If you have ever watch 2 seconds of the Super bowl, then you would probably like this game. Of course this game ain't perfect. But what game is, Let me break this down for all you Checker players. First off, the controls are great. Like all football games, it takes a few minutes to learn them. Of course you can change and configure them, but the default is good enough. Controls aren't exactly the thing to talk about though. There are so many things about this game, I could spend all day talkin' bout it. But I will cut to the chase.

Now when you pop this baby in your dreamcast you will already see what this game has to offer. Now this game starts you out on the easy mode, because even if you are a pro football player, you will need some le way when it comes to this game. You will notice there are plenty of options to choose from. Now of course you can just jump right into the fun, by choosing to play a quick game. But if your a rookie, then it's best to check out the tutorial mode. It will show you the basics you will need to play this game. Now when you decide to finally play a game, you find yourself amazed. But you can't stay too amazed, because this game demands so much of you. If you play NFL QBC or Madden(muhahaha), you will notice that you can catch the ball on a kick off and run to about the 40 or maybe even the 50. With this game, you actually have to follow your players and look for blocks. And just like in the NFL, you can usually only get to about the 25 on a kick-off. If you try to go out the defense will get you. IF you try to go in, the defense will get you. You have to be real experienced to actually get to the 50 yard line on a kick-off in this game.

After the kick-off, you start your offensive or defensive campaign. If your on offense, you actually have to think like a pro. In QBC you can pick a play and stick with it throughout the game. With NFL 2K you can't do that. You might pick a HB Option play and fool the defense to pick up eight yards. But the next time you pick that play, the defense will most likely set you back 3 or 4 yards. NOW THATS AI. The passing aspect is great also. The passing game truly comes to life when you get in control of the player. Now of course you can be a pansy, and let the computer control Randy Moss, but if you want the ultimate experience, you must see the player, and be the player. Unlike QBC, when you control a player, you actually have to press a button to receive the ball. You cannot just run into it. It is also hard to receive the ball and go into the promise land, unless your already in there. The defense will do everything they can to stop you. In Madden, a player will be right by you and not try and stop you. In this game, a player will be a mile away from you and still be trying to stop you (note: for all you british police officers, thats an exaggeration). Also there will be no cheap dives here. If one player is having trouble stoping you, you can expect the army to come storming in. The computer AI actually makes you think, what should I do, where should I go, what play should I choose next (decision, decisions). I have not even scratched the surface either. If you up the difficulty level to pro. You have changed this game from, the Vikings(you) vs. the Chargers(AI), to the Vikings(you) vs. a Superstar NFL Team(AI). This game will demand so much from you, that you probably won't focus on time or any other aspect like that. You will be so wrapped up in the amount of brain power in this game, that even if your a 350 pound food lover, you will leave food alone for a week. Thats how much power this game has. Not only will the control and Gameplay astound you. But so will the detail.

Speaking of which. I will say this. NFL 2K has set a new standard in Detail and Sound. This sports game has taken the madden disc for PSX, look at it's sound, greased that sun bitch up, and shoved it straight up you know whos A$$(no offense to the big man). Anyways the graphics are so real to life. When you tackle a player, the player actually falls in the right direction. When you catch the ball, Randy Moss actually extends his arms. You can see him catch the ball. When you watch a replay, the reason the guy misses or catches the ball, is rather he extends his arms or not. When a man is in front of a receiver and he jumps to get the ball. The receiver will actually go in front of the defender to catch the ball. Another interesting thing to note, is that when you are at the goal line and you decide to do a run play. If the player is short, he will actually dive and put one hand out to try and make the touchdown. And don't even talk about a end game situation. Say there is 4 seconds left in the Bowl game. 2 yards to go for the Cardinals. The ball is handed to Murrel, here comes a tackler. He is hanging on to Murrel, He almost has him down but just as Murrel is on the verge of being down, he gets an extra serge and just like in real life. He extends his hand to get in. TOUCHDOWN!!! Also the celebrations are excellent. The players react at te exact time they go into the promise land. In Madden, the players would stand there, and then all of a sudden they would do a little dance or something. Not in this game though. With all this said, there are always a few things that can be better about the graphics. Sometimes the players go into each other. That causes a bad effect and looks plain ugly. I really didn't have a problem with the sidelines. Mainly because all games have that problem. Of course NFL 2K isn't all games. But still that problem will be worked out in time. Those are about the only flaws. Rather than that. The game graphics Kick major A$$.

The sound is just another aspect. This may not be the biggest part of the game. But it sure beats Madden or QBC anytime. The announcers will interact with each other and make comments about the game and each other. Like there are certain parts in the game where the score will be high. One of the announcers will say "This team is going to be drawing half a paycheck this week, the QB is making it too easy on them", then the second announcer will come back with: "so are you willing to draw half a paycheck on the days where I am doing all the smart talking", then the other guy says: "when would that be". Thats just great interacting and sound. Although it's a far cry from real TV, it definitely beats the boringness of Madden. I must say this though, there are some problems with sound, the announcers do get repetitive, and they often don't announce things like big plays when someone else is talking. An example of this would be where the girl announcer is talkin' about the weather and you score a touchdown. Instead of the announcers saying. TOUCHDOWN, they just say nothing and keep it that way until the extra point. This is not that big of thing but it is rather easy to notice. There is nothing rather than that, that really makes the sound bad. It is certainly better than what the competition offers.

The lasting appeal of this game is great. This game makes you wan play it over and over. With the create options and other modes. There is enough here to keep you playing this game a long long time. You will want to experiment with things, and choose various teams to play with. This game comes close to the NFL in almost every aspect. Although there is no franchise mode. That is nothing to harp over. You will enjoy this game greatly. The final word is that this game is great. Although there are a couple of flaws with graphics and sound. This game will still amaze you to new heights. There is a lot more I could say about this game. But then I would be here all day. This game has an amazing engine, and the visuals are just an add on to that engine. You will have one of the greatest times of your life playing this game. And it doesn't matter whether you watch football to see what formations a team uses most, or rather you watch it because you like the uniforms, you will love this game. I am not a VC promoter, but do yourself a favor and buy the damn game. It's worth the 50 bucks your cheap self might shell out. Have Fun.
