NBA2K2 Review

NBA2K2 carries on Visual Concepts tradition of slick prentation and excellent gameplay.

NBA 2K arrived on the dreamcast to universal acclaim upon the machines release. The combination of slick presentation and solid gameplay ensured its success outside of the US market, a tough task for any American sports game.

NBA2K2 delivers the same fast, fluid and responsive gameplay that made the original the king of basketball titles. As with most sporting franchises, this game is more of a seasonal update rather then a new game, paying to the old homage āif aināt broke why fix itā. Having said that minor errors have been adjusted, animations no longer need to be played out entirely, so itās easier to hang a shot and play a killer pass at the last minute. Transitions between rebounds and dunks blend together better, giving the game a more natural feel. Whilst players also respond to your button commands quicker, an essential element to the high paced game of basketball.

As youād expect the game features all of the current team-line upās for any of the basketball die-hards out there, however the majority of European gamers can probably overlook this, the main thing is that NBA 2K2 is a very playable game. That said there is a greater emphasis on the actual player skills, new special moves have been added allowing you to leave the defence trailing, so itās better to play the ball to your most skilled offensive player when on the attack. This kind of insight helps out but isnāt essential to having a good game.

NBA2K2 has all of the game modes that youād ever want, the exhibition, practice, tournament, and franchise mode return virtually unchanged from the previous game, giving the game plenty of depth and replayability. New to the game is the street mode, allowing you to play some 2-on-2 if that takes your fancy.

NBA 2K2 looks the same as its predecessor, which isnāt a bad thing as it is the best-looking basketball title around, regardless of format. Player models bear an uncanny resemblance to their real life counterparts, whilst the detailed courts and fans help to immerse you into the game.

Presentation has always been a high point for Visual Concepts, the player introductions are as slick as ever, whilst the commentary is still the best in ANY sports title, keeping up with play, talking about player injuries and exchanging witty, if somewhat cheesy banter. Konami take note, we want commentary like this in the next Pro Evolution Soccer.
