Myst III Exile Review

Many PC fans will be familiar with the Myst title. The original Myst game brought new ideas and expanded the adventure genre. Ambient and almost still settings were brought to life by superb graphics and puzzles that really had you thinking for hours on e
Presto, the developer, managed to create the perfect learning curve so frustration never crept in but if it did you were compelled to keep trying if only to see what new and innovative ideas the team had created for the next screen/setting. Now with the third saga released does it offer the same excitement, scratching of the head and awesome challenge that the first two titles did?
Touch me!
Myst III: Exile offers pretty much what we all expect from the third instalment. Bigger, better, with more puzzles, finer graphics and even more immersive backgrounds. Time has dated the idea but only slightly! With five designers working on the game diversity in ideas, along with five worlds, gives this game instant appeal. Although I am loath to say it - this will please adventure gamers but the rest may well turn their nose up at this, which is a real shame! It hasnāt got trendy characters or plenty of action, violence or even sex, but it is a darn fine cerebral adventure!
There is also no denying that this is very much the old fashioned adventure game where
the player discovers things as they wander around the worlds. Interact, explore, touch, feel and use objects - you get the picture. Itās point, click and go! The central focus of the Myst ethos will always be the puzzles but thankfully they are sensible and intuitive. Some games have puzzles that are really stupid and leave the player head banging for days on end, Myst will have you thinking and possibly screaming but you will get there believe me!
Players can now walk and look anywhere they choose, all in real-time. Day changes to night, and weather changes from brilliant sun to dreary rain. Players also encounter real-time lighting and ambient environmental effects, such as lightning, flickering torchlights, swaying grass and trees and animal life roaming through the environment: All the locales are detailed, lush and totally believable!
Exile introduces a new villain, a bitter man whose home world was ruined by Sirrus and Achenar, and who returns to take revenge against Atrus and his family at their most vulnerable time. The player is trapped in a mysterious age, and must explore the environment and navigate its puzzles to gradually uncover the mystery of this new adversary.
The pivotal core of the Myst games has been their element of surprise, plus the strong story that unfolds and this is a real gem! Telling you too much would, of course, spoil things and all we need to convey is that once again you have a compelling plot with a number of surprises and twists, all with excellent narrative to draw you in as you play!
When we first loaded in the game we got a bit of a shock to see so much FMV in the game but this has been so well crafted into the story that you should not think this is merely an interactive movie or even a talking storybook! Once you have played this for 30 minutes you will find you simply canāt put the game down.
