Motor Mayhem Review

Is Motor Mayhem the car-combat game to crack Europe???
Vehicle Combat games divide the Atlantic like no other genre; US gamers are fanatic about them, where the likes of Twisted Metal are guaranteed success. Whereas in Europe these titles are often snubbed, perhaps we prefer our vehicles to race and not fight.
In the future, the most popular sports association is the Vehicular Combat League. Your goal is to take one of the eight characters and become the champion of the league.
I was initially impressed with Motor Mayhem, having not really been a fan of these types of games, the immediate fun gameplay appealed to me. Itās fairly straightforward material, drive around the arena collecting weapons, power-up`s and money, whilst trying to destroy your opponents.
There are only three different gaming modes offered; Eliminator ā“ last man standing, Deathmatch ā“ first to reach a set limit; Endurance ā“ succession of 1-on-1 battles. Winning each match will result in progressing to the next one with more opponents, whilst the games usually bland story unfolds.
As youād expect the action is fast and frantic, with no short supply of decent artillery at your disposal. One slight problem was with the gameās control system, which makes use of the left thumbpad for analogue acceleration and steering. The system made it hard to turn quickly due to the wide turning angles, and you canāt shift from forward to reverse quickly, leaving you sitting still, not an ideal position in a game like this.
The opponents youāll face are quite a tough crew, manoeuvring quite cleverly and often hanging on your tail. However once youāve learnt the layout of the arenas, progression through the ranks comes quite quickly.
One big disappointment is the lack of car purchases or upgrades at the end of each match. This would have added some much needed depth to the gameplay, ultimately leaving this a fun but shallow title.
Visuals are impressive with a vibrant futuristic feel, accentuated through the games energetic lighting effects. Textures are clean albeit not spectacularly detailed, whilst the games environments are large and packed with objects. A nice feature is the way that the levels are completely destructible, one level sees a giant overhanging TV crash to the ground, instantly killing any stupid enough to go beneath it. Occasionally when the arenaās open up the framerate drops affecting the gameplay, but on the whole it stays a steady 60 FPS, no matter how much action is going on on-screen.
Other modes include a Quick Brawl and 2P Vs, the two player mode is fun for a short period and only occasionally suffers from framerate issues.
