Midnight Club looks to be a superb title for the PlayStation 2
Very few driving games have attempted to use real life cities and scenarios as a basis for the racing. Apart from Midtown Madness on the PC and Metropolis Street Racer for the Dreamcast. With the added power of the PlayStation 2, developers are no longer restricted in how big they make the levels and previous problems with traffic and size etc should not be a problem. At this early stage of development Midnight Club is looking like a very hot street racer.
Midnight Club is a group of drivers with exotic cars that like to do a bit of illegal driving around some of the busiest cities and capitals. This involves racing at stupid speeds around public roads mainly at nighttime. There are three cities featured in the game â“ New York, London and San Francisco, according to Rockstar each level is identical in every way to real life, including every last phone box. Saying that even with the power of the PlayStation 2 it justs isnât possible to race around the entire 100 square miles of London. Therefore at a certain point you will come back on yourself, however after recent tests we have been advised if you were to race in a straight line on the London course it would take you just over 5 minutes, to get back to where you started.
Like Grand Theft Auto 1 and 2, the cities in Midnight Club are populated with living pedestrians and other road users. As Rockstar games would have you believe the city is alive, if you start to drive on the pavements, pedestrians will try there hardest to run out your way too slow and, well; you get the picture. The roads are also packed with traffic, from motorbikes to taxiâs and police vehicles.
There are a number of gameplay modes the traditotial Arcade Mode gives you a short quick race on se courses around the cities. If you choose Career mode you are put into a world of illegal activities and fast street racing, it also has gambling which is always so much fun. Your aim in this mode is to become the ultimate âstreet racerâ.
Midnight Club on the PlayStation 2 is looking very impressive, whilst there is still a lot of work to be done. Already there are a large number of cars on screen at once as well as wide landscapes filled with some special eyesights.
We haven't had a chance to check out the sound in this game yet; however we have been advised that it will contain a cracking sound track. Hopefully we will see some famous bands beating the drums in the background. Watch this space for more information.
Midnight Club looks to be a superb title for the PlayStation 2 rumoured to be a European and US launch title we will just have to wait and see.
