Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition Remix Mini Review

Konichiwa Tokyo as Rockstar's street racer heads to the land of the rising sun...
Fast and furious, Rockstar San Diego's Midnight Club franchise has quickly become one of the company's top series in its portfolio, with last year's Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition racing to success with sales of over 2.5 million units worldwide. With that in mind, when the time came to reassign the game as Platinum, Rockstar refused, deciding instead to add a whole new city to the game, together with more cars, and more customisable parts; come forward Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition Remix.
Despite a little bit of press spiel describing the game as the fourth instalment, Remix can be more accurately considered as Midnight Club 3 and a bit. Together with the three car loving US cities of Atlanta, Detroit, and San Jose that featured in last year's entry, Remix also features a fourth: the Japanese capital of Tokyo.
The open world gameplay that allowed players to enjoy the wind in their hair as they tore through the streets of Detroit at 200mph of course returns; the cars, the tracks, the nitrous and all the tuning options are back in their fullest for veterans to enjoy all over again, and for street racing n00bs to experience for the very first time. However, Remix also comes with the Japanese experience of Tokyo integrated neatly as a whole new option available right from the start of the game, so that players can enjoy the thrills of street racing across the pacific without having to complete the original game first - or endure the 14-hour flight (not that TVG condones illegal street racing).
As you'd expect, the Tokyo of Remix (Rockstar San Diego has created a city that's representative of the real world namesake) is a sprawling mass of spaghetti-like roads and neon-lit buildings, and continues to feel very Midnight Club. All of the gameworld components that made for an exhilarating ride in Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition including the smooth freeway entry/exit ramps, jumps and destructible glass fronted runways have been built into the city of Tokyo making it just as much fun as it's always been.
Fundamentals of Midnight Club such as the control system haven't been tampered with so Remix gives gamers the same intuitive drive of its predecessors, together with the special driving skills such as Rage that makes the series stand out as a whole. It means that DUB veterans who buy Remix will be able to easily transfer their skills over to the new city.
As well as a new city, Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition Remix also features twenty-four new vehicles from across the classes such as the Pagani Zonda, the Lamborghini Diablo, and the Hummer H3. Together with Tokyo, the addition of the new cars certainly offers a strong incentive for gamers to go out and buy Remix and add it to their collection, especially if they missed out on Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition the first time around.
With speed being the name of the game, the new garage space fillers won't disappoint, especially when they've been maxed out with the best mods money can buy. Yet more car components have been added to the already vast array on offer in DUB so for all you Max Power subscribers, it's Christmas once more! New riders have been added for the Chopper enthusiasts to throw something new into the two-wheeled mix, together with more bikes. Like the rest of Remix, the garage in the game is quite simply a case of more, more, more.
Away from the single-player mode, Remix also features Live/Network Play enabled action, bringing the gametypes of DUB (including the fastest version of Capture the Flag out there) to the mean streets of Tokyo. There aren't any new gametypes available in Remix unfortunately, but the fourth city is sure to inject a certain amount of freshness into the year old game.
If Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition was a PC game then the streets of Tokyo in Remix would be an expansion pack, and in more ways than one, it remains just that. The same DUB game that was released on Xbox and PlayStation2 is once again being sold in retailers across the country, the only difference is its bargain price and bonus material, which for Midnight Club fans will probably be all the incentive they need. Newcomers to the series should also think about dipping into the underworld realms of Midnight Club too, if only to experience the exhilaration of racing through the streets of Tokyo by the seat of their pants.
Arguably the best street racing franchise around, the Midnight Club series returns for an encore to hardcore fans and bargain hunting gamers alike. The value that Remix offers is second to none in the £19.99 price bracket, with all of the elements that made DUB great last year returning with a few friends in tow. Driving around Tokyo is something that some Midnight Club gamers will have never achieved thanks to the challenge that was Midnight Club 2, so it's rather helpful of Rockstar to package the city into Remix for all to enjoy from the off.
