TVG checks out the first glimpse of Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition in action…

With the surge in popularity of illegal street racing and car modding on both sides of the Atlantic, it comes as no surprise to learn that the Christmas market will be dominated by street-racing titles that feature heavy emphasis on tuning and modifications.

Whilst EA ready the successor to last yearâs hugely successful Need for Speed: Underground, the pioneers of the genre are gearing up to the confrontation with the release of Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition.

Fortunately TVG was lucky enough to attend the first demonstration of the game in action, and weâre quite happy to say that all the boy-racers and speed-freaks out there are in for one hell of a ride.

Certainly Midnight Club 3 picks off where its predecessor left, in the way that players are presented with huge open-ended cityscapes to race across in illegal contests. The inclusion of an open-ended environment may be a major addition to the Need for Speed: Underground series, however fans will no doubt know that the Midnight Club series has been doing this for some time, and RockStar San Diego have got big plans to enhance upon this aspect.

The team at San Diego have also teamed up with DUB, Americaâs premiere automotive lifestyle magazine, which has allowed the team to enhance the accuracy of the game and take it to the next level.

Whilst the chance to tune up your Nissan Skyline is a feature found within many racing titles, RockStar San Diego ambition is to move this on a step and give players the chance to customise and race high-level âluxuryâ vehicles â“ the likes of which many of us will never get the chance to own let alone race in illegal contests.

The game features over 50 licensed vehicles from the likes of Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi and Ducatti; whilst fans of Midnight Club 2 will be pleased to know that there is more emphasis on motorcycles this time around, with a wide range of types including Sportbikes to Choppers. Although the game features licensed vehicles, Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition will feature an accurate damage model, although this hadnât been implemented in the build that TVG witnessed.

However itâs the customisation aspect coupled with 8-Player online play that provides the main aspect for Midnight Club 3. The game features a huge amount of parts to allow players to truly customise their vehicles, ranging from different alloys to funky multi-layered paint jobs that change depending on the light that hits your vehicle. Players can optimise their vehicles for both âstyle and âperformanceâ, with a healthy balance between the two needed if you wish to progress and do so with a degree of flair. Certainly the concept revolves around customisation, granting players the chance to create their own unique vehicle, take it online and make sure rival gamers remember which car to keep an eye out for â“ an opportunity that should quickly ensure Midnight Club 3 becomes a huge hit online and players develop a âunique sense of ownershipâ for their vehicles.

Sadly we were unable to go Hands On with the build; however the actual game is shaping up to offer one of the most exhilarating rides weâve seen in a videogame. Once again the game revolves around racing through the open-ended streets, to navigate between checkpoints and beat your opponents. Judging by the brief demonstration that we were given of the games Detroit stage, it seems that a lot of thought has gone into the actual level designs, with wide-open roads to accentuate the sensation of speed and plenty of shortcuts to reward those who dare to stray away from the beaten path.

Visually the game is looking mightily impressive, with the environments packed with detail compared to the likes of Midnight Club 2. However the most immediately impressive aspect is the slick framerate and motion-blur effect that creates an overwhelming sensation of speed, along with a fancy lighting system that brings everything to life. The developers have incorporated a variety of special visual effects such as specular lighting and reflective mapping to ensure the entire selection of vehicles look spot-on, whilst weâre told that the heavy involvement of DUB has ensured the accuracy of both vehicles and the huge number of parts/upgrades featured within the game.

As with Midnight Club 2 the game features three huge open-ended cities to race against, however this time around the locations all feature within the United States. The demonstration featured solely in the streets of Detroit â“ home to the automobile â“ although weâre informed that both San Diego and Atlanta will be included â“ home to illegal street racing and the DUB culture respectively.
Final Verdict
Comment

The illegal street-racing genre has certainly become a crowded one in recent years; however Midnight Club 3 is shaping up to be one of the finest titles on the market and certainly a trendsetter within the genre.

The concept of heavy customisation, ownership and taking it online should create a unique gaming experience and one that we can see many racing fanatics taking to; whilst the team are keen to ensure they encapsulate all of the elements associated with the culture and particularly what DUB stands for.

We’ll be following the development of Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition closely; stick to TVG for a Hands On report soon.
