MSR will change your life!
Bizzare Creationās reputation is a good one. With a track record like theirs they canāt afford to release any old pap. F1 and F1 97 are just two of their crowning achievements, thatās a lot to live up to.
Their latest big gun is Metropolis Street Racer, due for release in spring/summer time is to be a driving sim like no other. Whilst games like Gran Turismo and Sega GT strive for perfection in the handling and number of car stakes, MSR seems to not be heading in such a direction. The designers are keen to point out that MSR will be a completely different experience from other driving games. However the details we would all like to know, Bizzare are keeping annoyingly tight-lipped about.
Probably the most intriguing aspect of MSR at this stage is its graphics. The designers jetted off to London, San Francisco and Tokyo to take a huge amount of pictures that would end up being used as the textures for the game itself. So with such effort being put into acquiring the textures, such an effort has also been put into the design. The cities are being laboriously constructed to look identical to the streets they intend to mimic. The end result is quite stunning and at this stage of development MSR looks better than ever. It is no lie to say that the backgrounds are more intricately detailed than any PS2 racer thus far. That is where that comparison ends though, RR5 and GT 2000 have far better looking car models at this stage but Bizzare are sprucing them up as we speak so expect better at release. Back to the Backgrounds though and they really are worth extra note, they look fantastic and driving at high speeds around locations familiar to the gamer will be an amazing feature.
As previously mentioned it is the original gameplay that will separate MSR from the rest of the racing ensemble. We can really only speculate at this time what the extra features will be but money is on some kind of online ranking system plus a story mode were you challenge other racers for respect or better yet money to upgrade your car and eventually buy new ones. Bizzare promise more but as said they wonāt tell. Maybe all will be revealed at the E3 over the next few days. Incidentally as this preview is written news of online Ferrari F355 has surfaced. This raises the point of a lack of a real-time competition mode in MSR. If they can do it with Ferrari they should do it with MSR, but hey maybe this is to be announced.
Little touches are being added all the time. Using a nice polygon saving technique Bizzare are getting more and more detail put in, all the areas are looking scarily similar to their real life locations. Londonās Big Ben even has a working clock face. Whatever time your internal clock is ticking at will be replicated on Big Ben itself. Also worth of note is that the game runs day and night, on certain modes your internal clock could determine what time of day you play in. Or better still if you play it in January the weather would be different from that in August.
One thing for certain Metropolis Street Racer is going to be a game to watch out for. It has all the markings of a classic game and everything is very nearly in a playable order. Our men in the US shall keep you posted with any further important updates.
