Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions Review

While Hideo Kojima, is busily beavering away in Tokyo at Metal Gear Solid 2, or whatever it may be called. Konami decided that they needed to quench the public's thirst for more.
Thus Metal Gear Solid Integral, which was released in Japan a few months ago, was born. Special Missions is actually a third of that Integral package and should be available at the rather handy price of £19.99 very soon.
The fundamental difference between MGS: Integral and MGS: Special Missions is that you aren't paying for the original game again. With Integral, Konami felt it needed to show the Japanese gamers how 'ard us westerners are when it comes to gamesplaying, and so the European version of MGS, which featured more difficulty levels and languages, was included in the package.
So what exactly has MGS Special Missions to offer seasoned fans of the original then? Well, lots, and, in fact, here at CSF we were gobsmacked by just how much Konami have fitted onto this little add-on disc. It features over 300 missions for Snake to tackle, with these building on the basic 30 VR missions which were included with the original.
Starting off with the 'Sneaking' mode, you have to evade the watchful glare of the guards whilst attempting to get to the exit. There are 15 levels in this section, and once you've conquered them all in 'Practice' mode, it's time to go against the clock in 'Time Attack'. This is basically the structure the game takes throughout as you then proceed through 'Weapon' mode and 'Advanced' mode. The more missions you complete in these three sections, the more are opened up in the excellent 'Special' mode. This is undoubtedly the game's best department, and the one that will test your abilities to breaking point. Starting off with simple missions such as '1 Min Battle'- where you have one minute to blast a certain amount of targets and enemy guards using your familiar arsenal of weapons, and 'VS 12 Battle'- which is the same but with 12 enemies on each of the eight stages.
Many of these missions must be tackled using each and every one of Snake's hi-tech arsenal. Some missions involve shooting glass targets, sniping guards from a great distance, and guiding Nikita missiles through complex maze-like structures. They may not sound too hard, but when you're up against a strict time limit, things start to get heavy and you'll soon be sweating!
Things get better and more complex when you unlock modes such as 'Puzzle', 'Variety' and 'Mystery'. Puzzle mode involves accurate manoeuvring and crackerjack timing. One such example was the second mission, you basically have a set of platforms arranged in a pyramid shape, each with two guards situated on. Using the one guard at the top of the pyramid, you have to throw him off down the centre, causing him to knock off the guards below, domino fashion. If the guard at the top spots you as you make a mess of the throw, he'll alert the guards below. causing them to move out of position. Tricky. Likewise, Variety mode involves such taxing tasks as dragging guards to a hole in the ground and then throwing them in- if you're spotted you'll have to start from scratch. Such clever sections indeed, and ones you'll still be attempting with ever-growing levels of frustration long after the rest of the game has been conquered.
For the Mystery levels, things are altered completely. You must rely on a cryptic clue given at the start of each mission to track down a killer. The range from terrifically easy to the kind of crime that only Kojak could solve. The best bonus you can hope to unlock in this Special section is 'Ninja' mode- yes, you finally get to control the mighty ninja, but only for three stingy missions. It has to be said that controlling Ninja is a joy to behold with him handling totally different to Snake and having a few sly tricks up his cyber sleeve.
Finally, other sections include 'NG Selection' and 'VR Mission'. The former features a new set of levels featuring super enhanced robot guards that can see and hear things from a lot farther away, and the latter is one continuous mission set across ten stages. It is one of the most challenging aspects of the game as you need to pick-up new weapons and items along the way and get through it within 178 minutes and just one energy bar.
Although it would be easy to denounce this game as a shameless cash-in, it really is nothing of the sort. There is enough here to justify forking out as it will take forever for you to discover everything. Also, parts of the intro sequence were generated using Playstation 2 technology, surely reason enough to take a look
