Metal Gear Solid Review

One can argue that after a game gets as much hype as Metal Gear Solid has, it's very unlikely that it will surpass it and deliver on all of it's promises.

Thankfully Metal Gear Solid has proven that after a hype of almost biblical proportions, it can meet, and in most cases even surpass all the hype surrounding it.

Being a fan of the original Metal Gear games (discluding Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake as it was not Hideo Kojima's project) I was very excited about this game ever since it was announced at the 97' E3. First of all, I must tell you that Hideo Kojima doesn't disappoint and Metal Gear Solid is no exception. From the very beginning you are sucked into a world of espionage, drama, lies and betrayle, one that you will never want to leave! But don't assume that this is an action game, Hideo Kojima and crew have taken so much time in finely detailing this game that it has carved out it's own genre and set a new standard for which all games should be judged by.

This is not a game for the trigger-happy gamer, as you will soon find out that you are no match for an entire army of genetically enhanced soldiers, keeping that in mind, this game follows it's predocessors, putting not only a small emphasis on being sneaky, but basing your entire alter ego on stealth and being able to way-lay your way through the base trying never to be seen and always keeping quiet. The graphics engine is superb to say the least! This is the pinnacle of PlayStation visuals and nowhere else will you see graphics of this quality and style. Also the sound and voice-overs are superbly done to perfection!! Hollywood can learn a thing or two from the scripting and role playing of Metal Gear Solid's characters. This is probably the best voice acting on any system ever! The innovations for this game doesnât stop at the sound, graphics and gameplay though, as you'll see if you're playing this game with a dual shock controller and a memory card, that Hideo Kojima left no stone unturned and nowhere else will you find details this thorough and satisfying.

There are so many commendable aspects about this game that a review of this size won't do it justice. I'll round up this review by nit-picking at some of the games short falls. First of all, one small down side is the lack of an option to skip through the codec messages that tend to run a little long sometimes(this only becomes a problem when you're running through this game for the 10th time to get the best possible time and rank) but this is a short fall that I'm sure only the pickiest of gamers will get frustrated at. Also some might argue that the game is a tad short, and yes a 15-18 hour completion of a game might seem a little short, but remember, you are a professional spy and have only 18 hours to complete your mission, I don't think it would be very professional if you can't even manage to get out of the bathroom without getting your self killed. There is also a 2nd ending, different goodies, and a need to experience the story over and over again just to be able to be a part of it all. Oh and this game leaves it wide open for a sequel, I canât say how, but pay attention to the screen after the credits roll....

Rest assured that this is one game that no PlayStation owner should be without. This is the kind of game you will remember forever and the one that will make Nintendo loyalists buy a PlayStation just to experience a masterpiece like this. Metal Gear Solid is definitely the game of â98 and in my book, the greatest game ever! Kudos to Hideo Kojima and Konami for letting us live the legend which is Metal Gear Solid.
