MediEvil: Resurrection Mini Review

Sir Dan arrives as part of the raft of PSP launch titles - but should he have stayed dead?
Itās a case of returning to the past as Sony gears up for the European launch of the PSP; behold the arrival of the fearless knight Sir Dan of Gallowmere in MediEvil: Resurrection.
Attempting to rescue the land of Gallowmere from the evil Zarok Sir Dan meets a timely end, and in death becomes the hero that he never truly was in life. One hundred years on, still skeletal and jawless, Sir Dan is back in action to avenge his death and dispose of the evil Zarok.
What transpires is a run-of-the-mill action/adventure that will please fans of the previous two MediEvil titles and perhaps a younger audience, but unlikely to impress anybody else. The uninspired gameplay and design is shallow and monotonous, while the rudimentary combat system soon becomes a chore despite an assortment of various weapons to get your bones upon.
Due to the lack of thumbsticks on the PSP MediEvil: Resurrection offers no direct control over the camera; instead it simple presents the ability to change the camera in the direction Dan is facing with the left shoulder button. As you can probably guess this leads to lots of frustrating sections with platform jumping and trying to combat unseen opponents thanks to the largely unhelpful targeting system.
On the plus side thereās a level of quirky British humour that provides the sole impetus for progress in the game, and is likely to appeal to a younger target audience with its loveable cast of characters.
Given its PSone origins itās nice to see the game looking like a current-gen title; SCEEās Cambridge Studio rarely disappoint in the visual stakes, with a certain degree of charm and personality oozing through the characters and environments the game takes place. Voice acting is of a suitably high standard while the spooky soundtrack is a treat on the ears, although sadly none of this helps to overlook the lack of charm shown by the gameplay.
In an attempt to add something extra for PSP owners the game features a variety of Wi-Fi enabled multiplayer mini-games, which are unlocked as you progress through the game. Although fun for a short duration the vast majority lack any addictive hook and the type of substance that will keep you coming back for more.
MediEvil: Resurrection? Perhaps Dan should never have bothered⦠Sadly the impressive presentation and the humorous cast of characters cannot hide the shallow and simple gameplay; it may not have the looks of a seven year old title, but the gameplay is most certainly rooted in the mid 90ās.
Just trying to play through the game was a struggle; sure the cumbersome controls and other such issues are frustrating, however the biggest concern is the lack of appeal the game has, boredom sinks in after only a couple of levels and thereās very little to re-capture this later in the game.
