The old school Hack n Slash returns FROM the 8 Bit grave.
The old school âHack n Slashâ returns from the 8 Bit grave, as Capcom bring the original Ghouls âNâ Goblins to the 21st Century, with a new name âMaximoâ, chances are youâll be hooked all over again.
Maximo is an all-new 3D action adventure game set for release on the PlayStation 2 early next year. The game inspired by Capcomâs immortal Ghosts âNâ Goblins series, will include many features from the classics series plus brand new gameplay elements.
In Maximo: Ghosts to Glory, players take control of the young hero Maximo, who returns home to find his kingdom in shambles. Not only is the countryside filled with hordes of the roaming undead thanks to his once trusted advisor Achille, but the scoundrel has imprisoned four beautiful sorceresses and forced Maximoâs beloved, Sophia to marry him. Maximo must rescue the four sorceresses, restore good to the kingdom, kick Achilleâs butt and get back his girl. Maximo must even confront the Grim Reaper himself as Achilleâs actions create havoc resounding throughout the underworld. Like the original gameâs Maximoâs health will reflect the items he is wearing, if his health falls to a low level he will lose all of his armour leaving him running around in just his spotty underwear, poor guy.
With his trusty sword for offence and shield for defence, Maximo begins the game with only a couple of basic moves including his signature downward strike. However, thanks to the gameâs character customisation system it is not long before Maximo has many more attacking options with which to defeat the undead hordes. Each time he defeats a set number of enemies Maximo receives a new attribute for either his sword or shield. These include transforming his sword into a flaming blade, calling down a meteor storm, the ability to throw his shield as an offensive weapon and creating tornadoes. There are more than 40 special abilities, moves and power-ups for Maximo to discover and master.
The environments have managed to keep that original feel, however with the power of the PlayStation 2, there are a lot of nice graphical features and the lighting effects are certainly impressive. The environments actually change around you, thanks to Achillesâ drill, which breaks up the land, the playing fields will raise, fall and collapse creating challenges and obstacles. Susumu Matsushita, one of Japanâs leading artists, designed all of the game characters.
Unlike most action games, where you can save the game at any point, Maximo introduces a new continue system. Players must collect spirits to earn âdeath coinsâ that can be used to pay off the Grim Reaper and gain Continues. Maximo is a return to the classic thinking in game play design. Itâs simple, fun, highly addictive and can be enjoyed by players of all ages. Advanced players can gain additional challenge stages, rewarding the player with new game play and added abilities.
