Marvel vs Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes Review

Capcom's sequel is good old fashioned fighting fun.
Well? Where do I start? Iāve worn down the skin on my left thumb again, which hasnāt been as sore since my original bout with Street Fighter 2 for the SNES. Folks, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is a 2D fighter revival. Fast and furious gameplay, beautiful visuals, lots of secrets to unlock, and more characters than in any other fighter yet.
While 6-button games like Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Street Fighter III leave you wanting the arcade stick, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 has been built with the Dreamcast controller in mind. Gone are the middle strength punches and kicks, leaving four basic attack buttons on the face of the Dreamcast controller. The L and R triggers are now used exclusively for team related moves. The game it self can move at super sonic speeds if you turn up the turbo levels.
One of my favorite new additions to the Capcom lineup is Jill from Resident Evil. She comes complete with the ability to summon zombies, rabid dogs, swooping birds, and even health herbsā¦a very creative use of the Resident Evil world in a 2D fighter.
Unlocking secret characters is no easy task. Every time you win a match, complete the game, or use the training mode you gain bonus points to spend in the āShopā menu to reveal more characters, costumes, and levels. This feature alone ought to keep you coming back for more rounds to win the new options. (Hint: When you leave the house or go to bed, leave the game on in a training match un-paused. Passing time in training will give more points to spend on bonuses.)
The graphics are simply amazing! The backgrounds might end up getting you killed a few rounds as you jump around trying to view the whole thing. The depth, clarity, and motion in the backgrounds are simply unsurpassed. The 56 characters from all manners of Capcom games and comic books are all beautifully hand-drawn and animated. Two teams of three characters each can all be on the screen at once in giant special move clashes, and you will not even see a hint of slowdown (even with Juggernaut or Hulk on the screen!).
Sound wise MvC2 is a mixed bag. Voices and sound effects are very well done and add to the chaotic pace of the game. The background music, however, leaves much to be desired. Many of the songs resemble lounge music and do not quite match the action. The looped music behind the character select screen is downright annoying.
Over the years, with numerous minor upgrades and sequels to prequels, etcā¦I had lost interest in the Street Fighter and Vs. series. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 has rekindled my excitement for Capcomās 2D fighting games, and will be causing my left thumb much more trauma in the coming months.
