Mario Kart Super Circuit Review

The most anticipated GBA title is finally here.
When the Gameboy Advance was first announced and revealed power akin to the SNES, gamerâs eyes lit with the idea of ports of their favourite titles. If there was one title that would be on everybodyâs shopping list it must surely be this one.
The original Super Mario Kart released on the SNES to universal acclaim way back in 1992. Many have tried to copy the formula, but none have quite managed to get it so right, even Nintendo themselves failed with the N64 remake. So the anticipation was high for Nintendo to get it right this time.
Mario Kart Super Circuit takes elements from the SNES version and from the N64 version, and merges them into one beautiful hybrid, the best karting game ever and playable on the move.
As with previous versions the single player experience requires players to participate in different cups, each comprising of four levels. The only way to progress is by completing each cup and progressing to the next albeit harder one, you know the score itâs Mario Kart.
Thanks to some devilish AI and the traditional cheating opponents, Mario Kart Super Circuit is no breeze. While 50cc may seem like a pleasant drive round the park, by the time youâve reached 150cc youâll be hustling for places and cursing as Bowser pips you to the post again. Itâs unfair at times, but boy does it keep you glued to the machine!
Thankfully Nintendo have brought the coins back, appallingly cut from the N64 version. Collecting these has two positive effects, firstly the more you collect the faster youâll go, whilst they also protect you, collide into a big bugger without any coins and youâll spin out regretting your split-second choice to avoid them. It adds a tactical element that was sorely missed from the N64 version. Collect enough coins and youâll also open up the four classic SNES tracks for each cup.
However as everybody knows Mario Kart comes into its own with the multiplayer modes. Grab three mates, and link up for the best multi-player experience available. The joys of using the lightning bolt at the perfect moment or pipping them to the post are in my opinion, unsurpassed.
The battle mode makes a welcome appearance, and thankfully the courses are better laid out then the god-awful N64 versions. One neat addition from that version is the first player that loses becomes a bomb, and can chase after the other players, revenge has never been so sweet!
Graphically Mario Kart Super Circuit continues with the hybrid translation, circuits employ the mode-7 trick, rotating and scaling smoothly. However the characters look more akin to their N64 cousin, employing a rendered look rather then the sprites used in the SNES version.
