Can the MTV license and soundtrack elevate this to where so many have failed ???
MTV Sports: Snowboarding is the first title of a four year agreement signed between THQ and MTV. As a result, THQ can now develop and publish MTV sports titles across the various formats. With there not being a great deal of competition to the Cool Boarders series, this title could be the one to become the next snowboarding champion.
What has to be said is that the graphics are pretty impressive. The courses available are varied and include lots of trees, rocks and rails to take advantage of. Locations vary from America, Japan, Norway and New Zealand
which are all unique in their own way.
There are five modes for you to choose from. These are challenge, create-a-park, head-to-head, qualifying and training. Challenge mode can only be accessed once you qualify your boarder. This is achieved by pulling off various tricks and combos (of which there are 46 including Board Slide and Tail Grab) across a series of courses until you have reached the required number of points. Once the challenge mode is unlocked, you can enter your boarder in big air, half-pipe, slopestyle and Mountain X events. Create-a-park gives you the opportunity to create your own course which you can then use to race against friends and save to memory card. Head-to-head pits your boarder in a race against the computer or another player. Finally, the training mode is self explanatory as it is where you can
practice the various tricks and become accustomed to the controls.
The events big air, half-pipe, slopestyle and Mountain X pose their own challenges. Big air involves getting as high a score as possible pulling off tricks, half-pipe gives you three chances to achieve a certain score, slopestyle requires an allocated number of points within two chances and Mountain X see you racing three runs in the best time.
Seven boarders are available and each have their own unique moves, style and boards. Licensed equipment is a feature of the game with companies such as K2, Forum Boards, Planet Earth, DC Shoes and Dub making an appearance.
With the MTV license behind the game it is to be expected that music from hit bands associated with MTV will be available. The soundtrack for the US version includes bands such as the Ministry, Voodoo Glow Skulls and H20 although the details for the UK version have yet to be confirmed. We shall see if it lives up to expectations when it is released in November.
