MTV Snowboarding Review

Around this time of a year, the slightest sniff of a sudden snowfall or perhaps the shrewd sign of an oncoming blizzard can have snowboarding fans wiping thier hands with glee.
It is pretty sad that they have to wait all year for the one chance to race on some 'natural' snow. Even sadder is the fact that they are often left hoping till next year. However, all is not lost if the world is not graced with snowfall as the Christmas rush of snowboarding titles begin to arrive.
The weight of MTV's global brand machine get's behind the particular effort, bringing with it their questionable line in US grunge and punk. All the same, everything you could want from a snowboarding game is here: the downhill race, the big air competition, the half pipe, five open tracks plus a range of characters carrying official, branded snowboards. Nice enough, yet there's an inescapable sense that something's missing from the moment you pick up the game.
Within a few hours you'll have mastered the trick system, cracked the qualifying stages and be ploughing through the depths of the MTV Challenge; a selection of different modes that are meant to test your prowess with your board. Except it's not really much of a challenge. Having got the hang of the tricks (which consist of the usual multiple flips, spins, grabs and the occasional special move) you'll easily clear any stages that involve pulling a stunt or two. That leaves a couple of racing levels, which are too concerned with the weight of your character rather than your skill at sticking to the racing line.
The graphics are functional, but there are inherent difficulties in creating stunning-looking snowboarding games. Moving a moving block animated on a white background is never an easy task. MTV does the job without ever threatening to drop your jaw. Switch to Head to Head Mode, though, and that familiar two-player pop-up experience rise to the fore. Just as you prepare for a stylish launch off an upcoming cliff, it turns out to be a dirty great pile of snow in pixel disguise.
In an otherwise breathtakingly bog standard game, the one feature that stands out is the Create A Park Mode. Functioning much like a track editor in racing games, this gives you the opportunity to craft your own ramp littered board park. It's a nice touch but it's very basic and we really feel that it could have been expanded upon.
There's nothing new or special about MTV Snowboarding and as the Playstation comes to the end of it's life, that's just not enough. I recommend you look to Cool Boarders 3 instead.
