Perhaps the most faithful videogame adaptation will appear on the GameBoy Advance, take a look...
The videogame adaptations of J.R.R Tolkienās Lord of the Rings is a confusing affair, whilst EA have grabbed the rights to a multi-format game based upon last years movie, Vivendi Universal have secured the rights to adaptations of the novel. No less then five games are set to release by the end of the year, with more based on later chapters a certainty.
The GBA title is currently being developed by UK outfit, Pocket Studios, these clever chaps you may remember took on the daunting prospect of porting Infogrames Alone In the Dark IV to the GameBoy Colour with unbelievable effect!
Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring follows the entire storyline of the first novel, The Fellowship of the Ring, and the first half of the second book, The Two Towers.
Lord of the Rings gameplay is focused quite obviously on the old-school RPG style, players will have complete control of nine members of the Fellowship in a traditional party collection method. Those characters include; Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin, Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and Boromir. Each of the characters have a range of different skills, attributes and attacks, each as youād expect will be enhanced as you progress further into the game.
To keep the target audience numbers high, LotR will be a simple RPG with many of the complicated and in-depth RPG elements kept in the background. Combat is turn-based, however this can be automated by an AI routine if the player chooses to do so.
Many of Middle-Earths locations will turn up in the game, each of which have been painstakingly recreated from Tolkienās original descriptions. According to Pocket Studios, the gameplay balance will allow players to go out and explore the environments whilst still taking part in the narrative offered by the books.
