There are two upcoming videogames based on The Lord of the Rings, we take a look at EA’s action orientated game.
One of my first videogaming memories is playing the text driven adventure game The Lord of the Rings: Game One on my ZX Spectrum. The game became a huge hit at the time, as players across the world were adventuring through a visually simple middle-earth with the basic command interface of pressing w to go west, e to go east and so forth. How fitting it is then that Lord of the Rings has become a huge success, and allows us to see the evolution of videogames in less then twenty years.
After last years film everybody knows Lord of the Rings, the adventure of Frodo and The Fellowship, so itās no surprise that two different games are coming out based upon it. Moneybags EA have secured the rights to the movie adaptations, whilst Universal has purchased the rights to adaptations of the original book. Both will offer vastly different gaming approaches, but you can guarantee both will sell in huge numbers.
The Lord of the Rings from EA will be released in the Autumn/Fall, strategically just before the release of the second film. The game is set to be a third person action/adventure affair, with players taking the control of Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas. Players will battle a vast supply of orcs, goblins and not to mention the movies more memorable monsters such as the Cave Troll and the Ballrogā¦
As combat is set to be the main focus for the game, the developers are working hard to ensure this doesnāt become another button bashing mediocre adventure. Each character will have unique moves, weaponry and skills that the player will have to tactically employ to progress through the game, as well as the help of other members of The Fellowship. Itās way too early to tell whether the developers will get this right, if they can build an advanced fighting system that requires more skill then just mindlessly pressing a few buttons, then thereās no doubt that a good game could emerge, however it is a risky one, get this wrong and the whole game will fail (but still sell because itās LOTR and because itās EA).
Dynamic and dramatic camera angles are set to emphasise the cinematic feel, especially during the combat scenes. Visually from the first screens released LOTR is already shaping up to be a good looking title, with sharp, varied and highly detailed textures. The developers are keen to ensure each location, each character and each monster looks faithful to their silver-screen counterparts, if they can achieve this then it will definitely be a major selling point over Universalās effort.
