Key members behind the new Leisure Suit Larry game speak to TVG...

In a special two parter â“ TotalVideoGames get the thoughts and observations of key members involved in the creation of Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude, the fantastic looking adventure game due for release on PC, PS2 and XBOX in October. There is much excitement and anticipation regarding this title for the Leisure Suit Larry franchise is one that has already been a massive success in the late 80s, early 90s and returns with the same humour and politically incorrect ideologies that made it so exceedingly popular first time around.

Tom Smith, Design Director

âModern gamers would find a lot they recognise in the original Larry games. There's echoes of The Sims in there, managing relationships and buying stuff for your character is all part of the process of play. We began development with these ideas in focus, but it rapidly became obvious that what really mattered to us, and to the game, was making it funny. But making a humorous game about hitting on girls is a pretty unique challenge in the current gaming climate. Finding the right model was going to be tricky.â

âThe other problem is just how to make it all flow together. Traditional RPG-style dialogue trees tend to make the whole process broken up and stilted. And, as we all know, the best part of jokes is to be found in the delivery. So we worked on that concept and came up with a solution that mixed the game-interface of Parappa The Rapper with a concept that we'd worked on when blending sound files for a NBA game. So in dialogue sequences the player guides an icon through a series of good or bad events. This keeps the player busy and creates some humorous results in Larry's conversation. As players will see, it's far more interesting than standard methods for delivering dialogue and creating humour on-the-fly. The idea was originally to make it play out conversations like you would play a rhythm-action game, but of course these things never turn out as you'd expect and experimentation was required before we got something that we were happy with.â

âThe conversation system is going to be integral to the success of this game, but there's much more to it. Not least of which is just how filthy and perverted we could be. This is a game about dirty jokes and so, thanks to Sierra's open-mindedness in development, this is pretty damned perverted. We think you'll enjoy it...â

Josh VanVeld
Producer, High Voltage Software

âIt just blows our minds to finally have elements of a game that we've been working on for so long actually up and running. The conversation system is working and we're now implementing the girls that Larry is going to hit on using the system in his quest to get some action.â

âThere is a total of fifteen main girls in the game. Each of these constitutes their own little story and adventure. Larry has to hit on each of them in a different way and their attitude and personality will determine the way his efforts pan out. Of course it also determines the laughs that are produced by his escapades. We're really proud of the girls - each one has a distinct style, look and pattern of behaviour. Our artists and animators have created something really beautiful with each of them. Of course Larry isn't limited to chatting up these hotties - he can literally interact with anyone in the game, including loads of other girls on the campus, so there's an even greater scope for things to deal with than simply creating a series of funny encounters with the 'main' girls. The biggest task we had to undertake in making all this work correctly was in creating convincing and amusing dialogue. There's a total of 12,000 lines of speech in the game, each one of which has to be delivered in just the right way by our voice actors. Getting this right has been an insane amount of work, but now that the results are coming in and we're getting close to the completed game, all that effort seems worthwhile. Combine the dialogue with the fantastic environments that our team has created and you get a lively and consistently entertaining world.â

âEvery day we're adding more funny and bizarre stuff to the environments. The whole process is making us crack up, so hopefully it should evoke a few laughs in the players too. We're well aware that there haven't been that many genuinely funny videogames in the last few years but we think that with Larry we've achieved just that.â
