Ralziel makes his long awaited comeback...
Soul Reaver 2 picks up immediately from where the first title abruptly concluded, with the games main protagonist Ralziel chasing after Kain through the depths of time. If this is the first time youāve been introduced to the world of Nosgoth you may be a little confused!!!
Despite offering a nice visual upgrade, itās immediately apparent that itās still the old-school adventure gameplay at heart. The game is very much an extension to the first title, the games puzzles focus on shifting between the spectral and material realms, although thankfully the block-shifting puzzles of its predecessor are but a distant memory. Whilst combat is simply a case of button bashing. The adventure genre is in danger of collapsing underneath itās own weight unless developers bring some radical new ideas to it, quick.
One nice touch is the removing of lives and continues, whilst in the Material realm Ralziel energy will slowly pass away, however in the Spectral realm Ralziel can gather the energy from Lost Souls. Being killed doesnāt restart you at the beginning of the level; it simply places you back in the spectral realm. This along with the seamless technique that removes the need for any loading helps to captivate the player and immerse you within the game.
After the first game gave us some memorable boss battles it seems slightly confusing that there are none featured in the sequel.
A major gripe with the game, although this does depend on your personal preference is the amount of backtracking involved. Ralziel isnāt exactly Sonic, so these moments which occur slightly too frequently for my liking become frustrating and hinder the captivating nature of the game.
Visually Soul Reaver 2 is a superb looking title, environments are brought to life with stunning detail, whilst the spectral versions are downright creepy. The characters themselves, including the various enemies that you face are well detailed and sport some very impressive animation.
Itās a tribute to Crystal Dynamics and the excellent scriptwriters that Ralziel has become one of the industryās celebrities, our anti-hero sports a range of different emotions, ranging from anger to despair, that you canāt help but feel through his motionless white eyes, whilst the games plot and story are of unusually excellent standard.
