Knockout Kings Review

EA Sports has done it again with this gem of a boxing game.
A great change of pace from the button smashing style of Contender. Realism is the name of the game for Knockout Kings. You can't just step into the ring and start letting your knuckles fly recklessly or you will end up with your back to the canvas. This game involves very in-depth gameplay that calls for a strategy. Unlike Contender which only has a few boxing styles divided between all the boxers, each fighter in KK has its own distinctive and complicated style for you to figure and find a weakness.
The game houses several different play modes. In exhibition and slugfest modes, you can choose from 38 of the greatest boxers of all time, or step into career mode and create your own fighter. You can fight your way to the top of the 30 boxers and you get a chance to improve your skills in between fights with the training.
The graphics are outstanding and are very smooth, not blocky like Contender. The rings and background are very realistic looking and your fighter can navigate the ring with ease. They threw in some of the actual arenas too! Controls are excellent and become second nature after a few bouts. You can choose from lots of different punches, combos and even headbutts. There are only a few aspects of boxing strategy missing, but not enough to take the fun out of this one.
The sounds are top notch, right down to the calls of the referees. Also included are the real voices of Al Albert and Sean O'Grady from Tuesday Night Fights and ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr. and everyone's favorite referee Mills Lane.
EA Sports tops the boxing genre with a superb translation of the sport of boxing. Other games may be contenders, but Knockout Kings is the champ, hands down. Rent it, buy it, play it again and again, to not do so would be ludicrous. Lets get it on
