In Cold Blood looks fantastic and sounds like it could even eclipse Metal Gear Solid.

Revolution Software are the masterminds behind the phenomenal Broken Sword series released on the Playstation and PC. Older games will also be familiar with Lure of the Temptress and Beneath a Steel Sky dating back to the Amiga era, which each prove that Revolution Software is one of the best storytellers in the industry, second only to LucasArts. Therefore, it shouldnāt come as a surprise to learn that this title aims to have one of the best plots ever accomplished in a Playstation game.

The game is set in the near future within the confines of Russia, MI6 Special Agent John Cord (thatās you) has travelled to Russia to help out a friend on a spying mission, only to find that all is not what it seems. From this point on, the game starts to reveal John Cord being beaten up by some unknown figure whilst experiencing flashbacks to a forgotten past. It is up to you to figure out just what is going on as well as find the guy who stitched you up big time. Professional Hollywood writers have been taken on board to help develop the plot to give gamers a detailed, cinematic and epic adventure. It becomes clear early on that the plot stems far deeper than just a personal vendetta, with plenty of conspiracies to wrap your head around. America and China are at the brink of nuclear war with each other and a seemingly neutral Russia is intent on making the situation worse. A female Chinese agent also enters into the scheme of things although which side she supports remains to be seen.

While the massive storyline is an integral part of the entire package, the gameplay promises to combine the action of James Bond with the stealth of Metal Gear Solid. A game of this type needs to have gadgets and there are plenty available at your disposal. Electromagnetic mines can trap enemies, hacking units can enable you to bypass security measures and motion detectors can reveal hidden enemies. These are just a small selection of the devices on offer. The stealth aspect is not unlike that of Metal Gear Solid, with plenty of planning and brainpower being the winning formula over mindless shooting. Enemies also have brains of their own, so it will not be easy to get past them without alerting their attention. However one note of concern is the length of the game. While the entire adventure spans across two discs, there are only nine levels to complete, which raises question marks over the replay value of the game. Metal Gear Solid itself was criticised for not being long enough and it will be interesting to see how Revolution handle this issue.

If looks are anything to go by then this is an absolute stunner. 3D characters are placed on pre-drawn backgrounds which are incredibly detailed and have bundles of depth, with locations stretching into the distance. Lighting effects have been put to good use as characters cast shadows on their environment and weather effects such as fog and snow add to the realism. The whole package looks believable as well as have the flavour of a futuristic world. Multiple camera angles can be used to see each location from a different perspective.

In Cold Blood looks fantastic and sounds like it could even eclipse Metal Gear Solid. If nothing else, with Revolutionās reputation and outstanding adventure games to back it up, the storyline promises to be something special. Until then, youāll all have to wait and see how it all turns out.
