Hyper Streetfighter II Turbo Review

You can have your Halo2 and Resident Evil 4; 13 years ago this was the biggest videogame around…
Back in 1991, a sequel to a little known fighter was unleashed in the arcades; coming at a time when games were in danger of becoming stale, that title was naturally Streetfighter 2, which went on to establish the one-on-one fighting genre as one of the most popular of the 90s, introduced the concept of a âcomboâ to the masses and spawned a legion of imitations along with putting Capcom well and truly on the map.
The next ten years saw more sequels and updates then even the most ardent Streetfighter could handle let alone remember and arguably weakened the franchise; whilst sadly the move to 3D didnât bode well for the genre and the previous worldwide success of the series rapidly diminished as younger gamers became more accustomed to the likes of Tekken and Soul Calibur.
There are however a group of loyal Capcom fanatics, who have followed not only the Streetfighter series, but also every other 2D fighter that the Japanese developer worked on. Putting emphasis on skill, combos and deft finger movements, Capcom 2D titles are certainly from a former period in videogames history, a time in which gamers had to practise for weeks on end to become good, a time when playing games was a challenge and not merely about plot progression.
Thankfully for that group of loyal supporters, Capcom have marked the 15th anniversary of the Streetfighter with the release of Hyper Streetfighter 2: The Anniversary Edition on the Playstation2. Amalgamating the classic Streetfighter 2, alongside Champion Edition, Turbo, Super and Super Turbo; Hyper Streetfighter 2 is simply a collection that no Capcom fan can be without.
Itâs simply a piece of history that younger gamers wonât be able to appreciate, let alone realise the sheer genius of a genre that has had its better days. Quite simply weâve never seen arcade perfect ports of these titles, sure some have been close however booting up this little beauty warps you back through the years, bringing back the memories of standing in that arcade for the first time and hearing the theme tune calling you over.
Based upon the Streetfighter 2 Turbo system, Hyper Streetfighter 2 features all the different versions of each character ever to appear in a Streetfighter 2 title (excluding the Alpha/Zero series) and places them all in one game, allowing fans to pit for example Ken from the original Streetfighter 2 before his dragon-punch was upgraded against Ken from Streetfighter 2 Turbo. Itâs quite surprising the level of tactical depth that this gives to the game and certainly plays to an advantage for those that know their Streetfighter titles, however itâs highly likely that theyâll be the only ones interested when seeing this on the shop shelf.
Besides that itâs the legendary Streetfighter that many grew up on and came to support passionately, whether it be pumping your entire pocket-money of 50p or forking out £65 for the first title when it was released on the SNES back in 1992 â“ and they complain about game prices these days!!!
Every aspect of the game has been perfectly replicated from the arcade versions, and it gives an indication of just how âoffâ some of the ports were during the 90s; everything from the opening credits to the scratchy sound effects of the original and exact timings are spot on â“ although the default difficulty of âVery Easyâ may insult the true Streetfighter fans out there, and signal a half-hearted approach to capture a new generation.
Alongside the games Streetfighter fans can gaze longingly at the Gallery section, containing a host of artwork from the series, whilst hidden away within the Options section is the original 1994 full-length Manga Streetfighter 2: The Animated Movie â“ however once again itâs likely that those buying this will already own a copy, alongside the even more impressive Manga title Streetfighter Alpha.
