Can Granida 2 expand upon the wonders of the first game.
Grandia 2 is one of the most impressive looking RPG's to hit Sega's Dreamcast. And with a machine dying for a good RPG it couldn't of come at a better time. The battle system is very much like that of its predecessor, distance and timing play a major role in a fight against the enemies. Unlike many RPG's like Final Fantasy which are turn based, players and enemies constantly move around the playing grounds, and you'll need to cover the distance to an enemy if you want to make an attack.
Charcters learn new techniques by mastering their weaspons, they can also power up their magical attacks by the use of spells they use. After a few attacks the combination of Spells will merge into new and more powerful attacks. At this stage we have only seen the battle portion of the game. Thee were four main characters, each with their very own attacks and magical spells. Most of the battle elements that were present in Grandia have been passed over to Grandia 2 which is a good thing. For example the gauge indicator shows exactly when the character or enemy gets their turn.
Thankfully although the game is still in development in Japan, UK and US gamers shouldn't have as much time to wait as UBi Soft is already started to translate the game, ready for a release later this year.
The graphics in Grandia 2 at this early stage look as if they make good use of the Dreamcast hardware, remember those stunning magic spells in Square's Final Fantasy games, yeah the ones that take about 30 - 1 minute to complete. Well there is plenty of these in Gtandia 2 and some of them will give Square a challenge. Everything in the game is rendered in 3D, each attack, spell etc is presented in a cinematic style using clever camera angles and postitions.
The sound track from the original game was superb, along with charcter talking, it worked quite well for an RPG. That's all back in Grandia 2, complete with higher quality sound tracks and even more sound clips.
Grandia 2 will certainly be a big hit around the world. It is an RPG that Dreamcast owners have been waiting for. Finally the Sega boys can put their fingers up to Sony lovers with their Final Fantasy toys.
