Gauntlet Legends Review

Gauntlet returns on the N64.

Gauntlet Legends for the Nintendo 64 is an excellent port of the arcade game of the same name. The game is based on the traditional Dungeons and Dragons theme.

The storyline behind the game is that an evil monster, Scorne has been released by the brother of a friendly wizard. Scorne has hidden the 13 Runes that give the wizard enough power to control him. Your mission is to search the different worlds looking for the Runes that will empower the wizard to open the gateway to Scorne so that you can destroy him.

There are four different types of characters a person can choose at the beginning of the game; wizard, female warrior, male warrior, and archer. There are also five hidden characters that you can choose from by doing different things throughout the game or by entering a code at the title screen.

Characters have four different attributes that increase at different rates depending on the type of character you have; strength, armor, speed, and magic. You also have the ability to increase these skills by buying attribute points. The points are extremely expensive, but they are very important.

The graphics in this game are excellent. This game plays with a very high frame rate. The game does use the expanded RAM pack for better graphics. The only time the frame rate drops is when there are four people playing and a ton of enemies on the screen. One little complaint is the lack of ability to control the camera angle. At times it would be nice to be able to control the camera and look around the environment.

The sound for this game is also an excellent effort. The sound effects make sense and they hit the situation. The music for the game is moving and exciting. It is different for each of the levels and it is not the boring, repetitive music that plagues similar games.

This is a game that is fun to play for a long time. One bad thing about all of the characters playing on one screen and not split screens is that there has to be some communication between the players. It is not necessarily a good game to play with your wife. She usually doesn't like be bossed around as to which way she should run.

This game is an absolute must own for all Dungeons and Dragons fans as well as those people who enjoy adventure/role playing games.
