Fur Fighters Review

From the developers of Metropolis Street Racer on the Dreamcast, Fur Fighters is another cute action-packed adventure game on the PlayStation 2.

Is the world large enough for another platform game? Apparently so.

Fur Fighters originally came out on the Dreamcast, however due to the decreasing Dreamcast market, sales were not good. A year and a bit later with some drastic graphical changes Fur Fighters returns on the PlayStation 2. Complete with Jet Set Radio style Cell Shading.

The developers have definitely taken a page out of Rareâs book when it comes to producing a cute platform game, this is apparent when playing Fur Fighters on the PlayStation 2. The story starts off when the Fur Fighterâs village is attacked by the evil General Viggo, a large white cat with a pet man as a sidekick (a complete rip of all the James Bond movies we know but it is quite amusing at times). To prevent the Fur Fighters from attacking him and getting in the way of world domination Viggo has stolen the clanâs children and has placed the little defensive kittens, pups and hatchlings across the Fur Fighters world. There is a total of 30 levels, spread over 6 distinctive worlds that include; New Quack City, Beaver Power, Cape Canardo, Dinotopolis, Anatat Tatanatat and Viggo Agogo. Each level has its unique areas within it, which will require a sharp shooter to take out the evil enemies, and a touch of the old brainpower to solve simple yet sometime gruelling puzzles.

The most distinctive aspect to Fur Fighters is the character selection process. Only like breeds of characters can save like breeds of baby; for example Rico the penguin can only rescue penguin chicks or Ruffus the dog can only save puppies. In the latter half of the game this process becomes quite challenging and certainly requires some thinking to overcome the puzzles you are set.

The PlayStation 2 version of Fur Fighters has thankfully been totally re-worked. There are loads of new additions including, new levels, more bonus games and weapons, alternative cut-scenes, enemies and puzzles. The new bonus levels are superb for example one new level sees the player take control of a flea on the body of their hero, you need to fight against other tics and insects to control the level. The AI has also been upgraded, enemy bears and dogs will now fight amongst themselves over weapons, they will even run in fear when theyâre low on energy.

The modification to the graphics engine is easily the most important upgrade over the Dreamcast version. The graphics are now rendered through the new Cell Shading technology that was previously used in games like Jet Set Radio. The characters and objects have that distinctive cartoon look which is superb. The game has very few glitches and runs at an impressive 60 frames per second, there is also real-time rendered reflections and shadow effects.

Comments
Fur Fighters is a very good game, however due to nature of the gameplay there really is nothing exceptionally new about this game. Bizarre Creations have worked hard on enhancing this game for the PlayStation 2; however do not expect anything outstanding as you will be disappointed.
