The Final Fantasy series is one the most popular franchises in Japan, and we are not just talking about the video game industry here.

When Square announced Final Fantasy VII for the PlayStation, it almost made the death of the Sega Saturn in the Japan. It just goes to show how much influence the name has on the video game industry. It's all about to start again with the console war between three main giants; Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft. Who will win? Whilst we can't answer that question it is certain that Final Fantasy will undoubtedly have a huge impact on the next generation system battles.

Final Fantasy X will be the first title in the series to be released for the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system. The Final Fantasy series has sold over 31 million copies worldwide and has been acclaimed by critics and gamers alike for pushing the envelope in terms of gameplay, graphics, sound, and story. Utilizing the graphic and performance capabilities of the PlayStation 2, Final Fantasy X is one of the most highly anticipated titles for the PlayStation 2 and is expected to be another milestone for the RPG genre.

The main character, Tidus, is a star player of blitzball, a hugely popular full-contact sport. Yuna, the female lead, is an honest and determined young woman who learns the secret art of summoning and controlling aeonsâ”powerful spirits of yore. These two people of widely different backgrounds and abilities must work together as they journey through the world of Spira. This installment of Final Fantasy features a distinct Asian influence, bringing a fresh feel to the characters, music, settings, and story.

There has recently been a whole host of characters revelaed such as the sword fighter named Auron, a mage named Seymour, a thief named Rikku, and other characters named Wakka, Lulu and Kimari.

Final Fantasy X marks a change in Square's direction with the series, the character designs are less cyber-looking and more aimed towards a fantasy-style that was present in the last game in the series which appeared on the PlayStation, however without people that have tails etc.

The main difference with Final Fantasy X over previous versions on the PlayStation is the backgrounds. FFX will feature fully real-time rendered 3D areas and a 3D World map with fully polygonal objects on it. The camera will automatically shift its perspective to correspond with the movements of the characters, a feature now possible due to the title being largely polygonal. After playing this game briefly at E3 (you should of seen the queues) this is a gorgeous looking game. The level of detail on the characters is second to none, and the backgrounds are fantastic, creating a totally immersive environment that you can quite easily get lost in. FFX will also feature voice-overs for the first time in the series, utilizing the âFacial Motion System.â Which basically means the facial detail and the lip movements are stunning. Another nice feature added is the fact that Characters will be able to rotate in and out of the party even in the heat of battle, allowing a âtag teamâ approach to fighting.

Summons have also been improved over the previous versions, they're no longer a one time special attack that characters can use. When Yuna summons a Shin, the beast will appear on the battle ground after a dramatic entrance, but he won't just attack and then disappear. Instead the Shin will become one of the party members and will be able to perform attacks much like the other characters. However once the Shin has powered up, it is able to perform an Over Drive Attack that's done by pressing left on the directional pad at the normal attack screen and then selecting the attack. Once the attack is triggered the screen will fill with colour and your opponent is in for a real treat.
