Fighting Force 2 looks to re-address some of the more serious problems with the first game, but is it enough?

The original Fighting Force game saw you in a game played in the vein of the old classic Double Dragon in complete 3D. This time around however, the sequel will be played from a third person perspective like the Tomb Raider series and boasts new additions to give the gameplay more variety.

Although human cloning was banned by International Treaty, the Nackamichi Corporation is assembling and testing prototypes of a human clone. The State Intelligence Police (SI-COPS) have been keeping an eye on the Nackamichi Corporation and are sending you in to investigate. The project will be top secret and as a cover story, Hawk Manson will be working for an environmentalist terrorist group well known for assassination and publicity stunts against scientists and research centers. As the role of Hawk, you must acquire information and keys so you can reach the Nackamichi Corporation and destroy the clone and any other vital information. The advancement of the plot will be revealed in the form of cut scenes over 22 levels. After the fifth level, the levels will have two exits. Which you choose will determine the order the following levels are played in, which should give the game more replay value.

One of the main changes from its predecessor is a new 3D game engine which includes an advanced combat system. Players can fight with hand to hand combat
as well as have the use of weapons at your disposal. Some weapons are available to you at the beginning of the game whereas others can be collected as you progress through the missions. Although the focus on combat was the main issue in the original Fighting Force, this time around there is more emphasis on stealth and stragety so you can't enter a level guns blazing and expect to win the game.

Graphically, the game is a lot more polished than before. The levels you have to negotiate are bigger and includes real-time character and object lighting. Characters have more detailed animation and features. Your characters outfit and equipment changes to suit the environment you are in.

Another major change to the game is the AI of the computer characters. Interaction with other characters and the environment surrounding you will be essential to gain the information you need to progress to the next stage. The characters will react according to your actions. If you are not perceived as a threat, then it will be possible to get the clues you need and avoid confrontation. If you start firing at them however, characters will either respond violently or run for help. How you approach the missions will determine how successful you are.

Fighting Force 2 looks to be very promising indeed and if it can deliver its promises we could be looking at the next Tomb Raider champion.
