Eyetoy: Monkey Mania Mini Review

The crazy primates from Ape Escape jump ship and head over to this EyeToy based Party game...
The release of this latest title to utilise the EyeToy, what has to be one of the most innovative peripherals in a console for years (certainly since the release of the NESā R.O.B.), comes virtually at the same time as Nintendoās Mario Party 6, which itself makes use of a non-standard peripheral ā“ a microphone. Both titles are aimed at a multiplayer audience, and both aim to be the latest in virtual boardgames. The Mario Party series has certainly proved to be very successful for Nintendo, but can the Apes give the PlayStation 2 itās very own boardgame title?
The game can be played with up to three other people and takes place across a few different maps, each with their own over-saturated environments. The rules are quite simple ā“ get to the last space, but to be honest, itās doubtful that you will since the game isā¦wellā¦a bit dull.
One of the great things about the Mario Party series is that at the end of each turn you all get to play a mini-game, which helps to keep the level of fun up to a certain level. Sadly there are long periods in Monkey Mania where the only user participation is standing up and spinning the ārouletteā wheel that decides the number of spaces your monkey can make. True, youāll be hopefully picking up mini-monkeys along the way, which you can then trade in for various upgrades and traps, but the novelty soon runs thin and youāll be sticking a different game in the drive.
Graphically the game is quite basic and is certainly a disappointment when held up against its EyeToy peers such as AntiGrav, and itās main competition, Mario Party. Overall Monkey Mania fails to deliver what could have been a very fun party game, but instead the sometimes long waits between mini-games just turns you off it.
