Exclusive: Tekken 5 Q&A Feature
Derek dela Fuente
11/04/2005

TVG asks the questions you want answered; Tekken 5 online, the future of fighters and what next for Tekken all revealed...
It may seem a long time until this summerâs release of the eagerly awaited Tekken 5, but Derek dela Fuente managed to put a series of questions to Katsuhiro Harada, Director and Lead Game Designer on Tekken 5 which might help to soften the blow for the fanatics.
TVG: What are the biggest improvement and various changes that Tekken 5 has incorporated compared to Tekken 4?
It cannot just be compared to Tekken 4; we have taken all the most popular and high quality parts from Tekken 1 - Tekken 4 and implemented them in Tekken 5.
We emphasised the âTekken feelâ â“ thrills; pain; sense of speed and the tense atmosphere of the game; powerful attacks from distance; and also detailed risks attempting close range attacks - these elements can be enjoyed by Tekken fans and by new Tekken players and it will be a sensational experience for them.
TVG: Please could you tell us a little about the character customisation features to be found within Tekken 5?
The player can purchase items using fight money which the player has earned. These items can then be worn by the selected character. Items include different hairstyles, sunglasses, things which can be carried on characterâs backs and things to wear around the waist - there are so many varieties of items available. Also colours of items can be changed so that players can enjoy their own customisation!
TVG: Tell us a little about the bonus modes to be found within the game?
Devil Within is an original 1P action adventure game with different control from the main Tekken 5 mode. Using the analog stick, the player can control Jin freely in 3D. Basically, the player needs to defeat enemies and solve puzzles to progress and clear stages.
It is also possible to earn fight money here as well.
The player can fill up the Devil Gauge to become the powerful Devil Jin! Enjoy a different feel to the usual Tekken.
TVG: Whatâs the hardest aspect in translating the arcade original to the Playstation2?
The arcade hardware is much more powerful than PS2 hardware. It was really difficult to make it move smoothly and beautifully. However, we made it possible to create PS2 Tekken 5 with similar quality to the arcade version! As for the game balance we have converted it 100%.
Also previous Tekken arcade versions were converted to PS2; it required a lot of work so that players could enjoy the Arcade History Mode.
Only with Tekken 5 can players enjoy classic arcade versions of Tekken 1, 2b and 3!
TVG: The fighting genre appears to be less popular then it once used to be; what do you feel is the main reason behind this and do you consider Tekken continuing as it is into the future or perhaps further spin-offs such as Death by Degrees?
First of all, it can be said that an increase in the number of games in the current market is one of the reasons. In the past, it was almost only fighting games or racing games for playing against each other directly. However, in the current market, there are various games where people can enjoy playing against each other and this is due to evolving network games.
Furthermore, as sequels of fighting games came onto the market, players got better and better and players new to the genre required lots of practice to reach the same level as experienced players. This could be another reason behind it.
For the Tekken series, the new players are given the chance to beat the advanced players so that players who have not played Tekken before can enjoy themselves.
As for future directions, it is a secret!
TVG: Tekken 5 uses Endorphin; can you tell us how extensive this is and what areas it will improve within the game? Do you feel this animation systems is possibly the most sophisticated to date?
It is not used in the game. It is only used in a part of pre-rendered movie.
Basically, this software calculates all the physics you need. For example, if a character is punched and flew away, each motion will be created one by one to create motion capture respectively.
Using motion capture takes time and a huge workload, however, using this software, various motions can be created in a very short time. In the movie, this is used for a scene where a bunch of Jack-5s are beaten away.
In the game, all motions were created using motion capture and this software was not used.
To add on this subject, lots of people mistakenly think that motion capture = real movements, but the data taken from the motion capture is processed by the motion designer and this procedure makes real movements. It is not possible to use motion capture data without processing it, as motion capture itself is recording data of movements. Thus most of the movements in Tekken are movements created manually.
How do you see the fighting genre evolving across the next few years and formats?
In the future, if optical fibre network systems will be set up better, then fighting each other on the net might improve. However, at the moment, it cannot be said that the network structure capability for fighting games is well set up as there are time lags which affect the playerâs enjoyment. Because of this lag, players do not take risks in the game which makes it much less satisfying.
If network structure capability for fighting games can cope with and be able to set up an environment where network communication speed is as fast as in the game, it will open new paths for fighting games.
Also it might be possible for character customisation to evolve so that players can create original character skills to involve players more emotionally, like creating characters in RPGs, or a new concept for a game might become a new genre.
TVG: Was there any intention to support online play in Tekken 5?
Not only did we discuss online play in Tekken 5, we have been discussing other online ideas. However, as mentioned above, the environment of network structure needs to catch up.
Details are secret but we have very knowledgeable online staff in our dev team.
TVG: Where next for the Tekken franchise?
Again it is a secret at the moment! Please wait for it with anticipation!
TVG would like to thank Katsuhiro Harada for taking the time to answer our questions; Tekken 5 is scheduled for a European release on July 1st, weâll have a closer look soon.
