Exclusive: Gregory Horror Show Q&A Feature

We chat to the director and assistant producer of this bizarre looking survival/horror from Capcom...
Gregory Horror Show is one of the quirkiest looking games weāve played and seen for a long while. Itās one of those games that once you start playing you just want to play it to the end. Itās full of intrigue and inventive ideas. Itās strong ambience and very Japanese presentation has an endearing quality and from the small demo we have played we canāt wait to get our hands on the final review sample.
Gregory Horror Show is based on a Japanese anime show and we are informed it is a bit of a cult series over there and if you surf around the net youāll find cards and collectables all based around the cast ā“ a bit like Pokémon.
The game itself, and we shall be reviewing it very soon as it is due for release in the first week of December, is all about trying to escape from a haunted hotel. During your stay, you will need to collect souls in order to open new passages and advance to other sections of the hotel. Stealth actions are the order of the day as you try to sneak up on some unexpected guests. Looking through keyholes is high on the priority list of a number of characters as you endeavour to stay one step ahead!
To get into the mindset of this game we were lucky enough to be able to put some questions to two of the people involved in the creation of the title, Eiro Shirahama (Director) and Minae Matsukawa (Ass. Producer).
TVG: What has inspired this game and what marks this down as different from a number of horror games we have seen before (apart from its presentation)?
Well obviously our main inspiration comes from the cartoon series and it would be wrong of me to say we werenāt influenced by Resident Evil ā“ you only need to check out the green herbs in GHS to realise that. The main difference to other horror games is that the players have to observe your hotel guests, noting their movements, habits and importantly the time that these actions take place. Once you know these things then you can exploit their weaknesses and steal their souls.
TVG: How close are the game ideas to that of the card and collectable game and cartoon series?
They are based on the same characters and use Naomiās character designs.
TVG: Obviously the game has a very Japanese feel and look? Do you believe this will be fully appreciated by European gamers and why is this look so popular in the Japanese market? Does it allow you to focus more on the gaming elements?
Japan is always looking for different types of anime styles. We really are an āanime cultureā and so we are always looking for that next new and unique thing⦠I think this will appeal to individuals not necessarily people from any particular country. Some people will understand the coolness of Gregory and others just wonāt. Too bad for themā¦
TVG: How do you collect souls ā“ how varied is this task - and is there a linear route and progressive challenge to the game?
Each guest is very unique and so is their weakness. Concerning how linear Gregory Horror Show is, while it is true that on a certain night you may have to capture certain souls, you can collect these souls in any order. There are 4 souls per chapter. Those 4 souls can be caught in any order but you must beat a chapter to get to the next 4 souls.
TVG: The game appears to be based on a time dynamic similar to that in Nintendoās āThe Legend of Zelda: Majoraās Maskā - can you elaborate on this a little for us?
Actually it is quite different. Majorās Mask is about slowly doing a certain task before time RUNS OUT. Gregory is more a game based on characters. You have to really get to know the zany characters and their daily life styles in order to really crack the game and figure out their weaknesses. Zelda was about beating the time limit. This is about using the time to manoeuvre your way through the mansion.
TVG: How big is the hotel and how many guests are there? Please also tell us about your fav character!
Well, there are 5 floors to Gregory House ā“ the ground floor and the first floor, plus three basement levels. Players also get access to the garden and hopefully, if they collect the souls of all 15 guests, then theyāll be allowed out of the front door.
I like the Neko Zombie because heās really the only sane character in the game. The other ones are just a little too crazy for me.
TVG: Can we expect to see more from Gregory and his cast at the Horror Show?
That all depends on how the game sells, so hereās hoping it does really well.
TVG: What are some of the games the team like to play?
We are all playing Siren right now. Itās a pretty cool horror game.
TVG: Finally, if you had to sum up this game in a sentence how would you describe it?
This game is about following your desire. It will lead you the right way. Basically just be yourself when you play it and try to solve the puzzles.
