ESPN International Track & Field Review

Button bashing classic sports action.

Konami's long running series, International Track & Field has finally made its way to the Dreamcast (and soon to PS2), but that is no reason to get excited. This game has a combination of the good and the bad, it's just to... um.. bad that this game has more umm.. bad than good

The contests consist of repeatedly pressing the "X" and "B" buttons at alternating speeds, the faster you press them, the faster you will run, or the more power you will build up. You will realize that the control scheme is painful from the get go, if you don't realize this when you first start playing, you will as soon as the blisters show up on your thumbs.

The events aren't all bad though, and you do feel pretty good when you start to break the records in the twelve events on this game, especially the 100 Meter Dash, but along with the 100 Meter Dash, you will also be able to compete in the Long Jump, Hammer Throw, Weightlifting Jerk & Pull, Pole Vault, Javelin Throw, 110 Meter Hurdles, Horizontal Bar, Triple Jump, High Jump, Women's Vault, and Trap Shooting events. Some events however, aren't immediately playable and must be unlocked through victories in other events. This process may take you a very long time if you aren't a patient fellow.

While all these events may sound cool, and when you see them on TV, they look cool, the truth is, only a few are really good. Personally my favorite events are the Javelin Throw, Hammer Throw, Trap Shooting, and the 100 Meter Dash. These events can be really fun, and the act of beating your old world records over and over again is pretty satisfying, see if you can break my 100m Dash record of 9.39, or my Hammer Throw record of 106.79, don't cheat with a turbo controller either!

Ok, most of the events are bad, the control scheme isn't the greatest, so what does this game have going for it? Well, the graphics are pretty nice. The best yet in this genre. Konami also does a great job in the presentation of this game, realistic camera angles, and beautiful daytime/nightime lighting and scenery make this game very nice looking. Still, this just isn't enough to make up for the horribly gameplay Track & Field delivers.

This game is better than anything else out there in the Olympic Games genre, but it's not a game that I can say is a must buy, it has it's good points, and it has it's bad points. If interested in this genre, do yourself a HUGE favor and rent this game before buying, you may just be angry at yourself for paying the $40.
