In the jungle, the mighty jungle - DK bongo bashing returns...
Last year saw the debut of Nintendoâs Bongos peripheral, which accompanied the release of Donkey Konga. The game was a rhythmic title that rode on the back of dancing games and placed gamers in the position of Donkey Kong as they tapped their way through a number of tracks. Whilst the game was multiplayer, the fact was that to really enjoy the game with friends, players would have to have up to three extra sets of bongos and that was rarely going to happen.
Shortly after the release though, Nintendo announced that they were to continue the franchise with Donkey Konga 2 and 3, which caused a little bit of eye rolling in TVG Towers. However, after playing through endless replays of âBreakfast at Tiffanyâsâ, âDonât Misunderstand Meâ, and âJungle Boogieâ one thing become clear â“ this was much better than itâs predecessor.
Although the game does feature some game types that would be more enjoyable with four sets of bongos (namely the Concert mode), DK2 also includes a mode that allows one player to tap out the beat whilst the other claps â“ which opens up all kinds of problems. The Shopping Mall once again allows for the purchasing of hard âGorillaâ versions of the songs as well as a series of different bongo SFX that certainly add that little extra something into the mix.
The game doesnât push the boundaries of gaming in any form, although itâs certainly much more fun than Donkey Konga with more content and a better defined âvideogameâ structure encompassing it. There are plenty of options for the player, and whilst it is annoying that the gameâs full potential is held back by the necessity of having four player, there has been an attempt to compensate those who donât have the percussion peripherals.
