Dino Stalker Review

Dino Stalker is the latest title in Capcom’s attempt to merge light-gun shooting with free-roaming adventure...
If there was an award for the most absurd storyline, then Dino Stalker may be in chance for an award, as it stands it doesnāt cut the grain in terms of an enjoying videogame experience.
Taking the role of a crack WW2 pilot during a heated dogfight above the Atlantic ocean, you find yourself shot down and bizarrely transported just before the German pilot comes in for the kill. Free-falling from your narrow escape you find yourself unexplainably equipped with a futuristic gun and wristwatch timer, and a group of pterodactyls to take out.
As the latest attempt in Capcomās effort to nail the light-gun/FPS genre that it seems intent on pursuing, Dino Stalker is certainly an improvement on previous versions, however itās neither the best light-gun game out there or the best FPS youāll find on your Playstation2. As it stands the two parts donāt gel together to create a worthwhile experience.
Anybody who has played the previous versions will know what to expect, using either the Gun-Con 2 or Dual-Shock 2, the game offers a mixture of gun-shooting action and free-roaming adventure to give you full freedom of where you move ā“ as opposed to the traditional on-rails approach favoured by most shooters.
Each level has a fixed time limit in order to complete the level in, picking up time crystals along the way adds to this. Unfortunately the timer does nothing but add to the frustration of playing Dino Stalker, sure you can see the reason why itās there; to try and heighten the excitement and create a sense of urgency, but all it does is negate the free-roaming feature that the game is all about.
The main problem with this game is in the control department. Using the thumbpad on the Guncon 2 just proves to be irritating and quite frankly painful within a short time. Soon youāll find yourself switching to a normal joypad, however this in turn removes half the fun to be had during the shooting scenes. Leaving you with a first-person shooter that just doesnāt compare with the likes of TimeSplitters 2 and Red Faction 2.
To be fair Dino Stalker certainly has its plus points; when the action does get heated it certainly becomes more enjoyable as Raptors spring out of the grass at you, whilst thereās a great sense of satisfaction to be had with the vast range of secondary weapons to be found; blasting a grenade into the forest and seeing five dinoās get blown into the air whilst trees come crashing down around you is certainly an experience that most games in this genre fail to match.
