Diggles Review

You`re in charge of a clan of Dwarfs who need to search the underworld for an evil dog who is causing terror throughout the land.
The gaming industry is big, very big and unfortunately for smaller developers and publishers getting your work noticed can be a gruesome job. So itâs great to see a title come from nowhere and prove to be a big hit. Diggles could be one of them.
Developed by German based Innonics, Diggles (Or Wiggles if youâre in German) is a strategy game based around Dwarfâs or Diggles.
The Story:
Godfather Odin has chosen the dwarfs to set out on a long and burdensome expedition to the center of the earth where Fenris, the hound of hell, spreads terror. Fenris was once Odinâs watchdog and ran away. Ever since he became aware of his growing power and strength he has been terrifying the underground world. Fenris must be disarmed and put on a chain. This task requires a very special chain, the Gleipnirâ¦
Accomplishing this dangerous mission will take decades and involve many generations of dwarfs. During their journey the dwarfs have to pass through four different worlds and more than 100 different quests must be solved. You need to arrange a daily schedule for the dwarfs by determining how much they work and how they spend their leisure time. Furthermore, research activities can be engaged and fighting strategies have to be planned.
The most important goal is to find all the rings for the chain, which is needed to break Fenrisâ power and to prepare the Diggles for the crucial fight against Fenris.
Diggles is best described as a Dungeon Keeper style game, this time instead of controlling the evil Goblins; your minions are the Dwarfs. As the game progresses your Dwarfs will discover new skills enabling them to invent different items and weapons, which can be used to their advantage later in the game. However all the action is under the surface, luckily your dwarfs have mastered the skills of tunnelling. As the player you will need to plot tunnelling routes for your dwarfs to mine, as you progress different underground caverns will open revealing new areas and items such as rocks and minerals which can be mined. The items that you collect i.e. Stones, Wood will allow you to build new buildings, like a Stonemason, Brewery, and Tents etc. However only certain Dwarfs with the right level of skills can build them, for example a Stonemason requires a Dwarf with a minimum of 3 Stone points.
Whilst the game offers a wide selection of quests and mission, you canât help but to feel that something is missing. After attempting the tutorial missions you are left feeling slightly confused and certainly irritated. Once you start the main game things donât get easier either, and the only way to actually figured out what is happening is to simply try everything and anything until you actually get it right.
The graphics are similar to those seen in cartoons, with cute dwarfs and colourful backgrounds, however the introduction of a âJoint Smokingâ Dwarf is quite amusing, are they trying to please the Amsterdam players? The game is viewed from the side rather than top-down which is common in this style of game. However using the mouse and keyboard you can take complete control of the camera to give you closer look from the side, or to pan back and view the entire area.
The Dwarfs âA.Iâ is actually quite impressive, once they have a schedule telling them what hours to work and what leisure hours they have, they should act automatically. Some of the things they get up to is fairly amusing, playing ball, singing, itching their behinds. A nice touch is their talking abilities. If they find another Dwarf they are likely to break into conversation detailing what has happened to them recently, if youâve treated them well they will say so, if not be careful they can be right little moaners.
The background Music fits the scenario incredibly well, with dramatic Tribal Style music when you enter a fight to peaceful animal noises when everything is okay. However a big problem is the cut scenes used to develop the story. The voice-overs have to be the worse around, probably beating Resident Evil, which is quite a task.
