Tsuyoshi Tanaka lets us know what to expect from Dante's resurrection...

The third instalment in the Devil May Cry series comes with a twist in the tail and if gamers were slightly disappointed with DMC2 then this should appease everyone.

In this prequel, the part human half-demon Dante has a twin brother, Virgil, and this is not a tale of brotherly love, quite the opposite. In what many are calling the slickest and most appealing opening scenes in a game, Devil May Cry 3 focuses on pure unadulterated gameplay â“ where at the start of each mission you will choose a specific fighting style to adopt. A classic tale of good v bad ensues and in a brief but informative interview with Tsuyoshi Tanaka, Producer of DMC3, TotalVideoGames managed to prise out some nuggets of interest.

As in the previous games, the rewards for defeating enemies will present a fistful of goodies in the form of weapons, upgrades and must have items, along with purchasing powers with red orbs plus the possibilities to unlock certain items. Presently a number of in-game ideas are still being worked on, with additions and features still to be announced.

The backdrop story to the game tells that several thousand years have passed since the demon warrior Sparda raised his sword against the unholy demon world to save the human race. After a long and arduous battle, Sparda emerged victorious and joined mankind to father Dante, a half human-half demon son infused with the power of a supernatural lineage. However, Dante was not the only son Sparda had sired. As devoted as Dante was to defeating the forces of evil, his twin brother, Virgil, was consumed by dark power and upheld the legacy of his sinister ancestors. One moonlit night, a mysterious tower materialised beside Dante's âDevil May Cryâ investigative agency. On the rooftop stood his brother along with his inhuman minions goading Dante into a confrontation.

As highlighted, Devil May Cry 3 unfolds an earlier chapter in Dante's history, before the original Devil May Cry, of the fateful clash between Spardaâs twin sons, divided by the divergence of their chosen paths. Along the way, the very much younger Dante encounters formidable foes and unusual characters including a mysterious man named Arkham and a female hunter named Lady whose mission is to take down all demons, including Dante. These precursory events disclose the complex roots of Dante's character and reveal insight into his clouded past.

TVG: What would you say the Devil May Cry brand represents and what is the biggest change and focus there will be on DMC3?

It represents good solid action. The focus of DMC3 is to make Dante look cooler than ever before and in a massive departure from DMC2, control and play more like the original title. The biggest change overall is the style feature.

(This style system adds an additional level of depth. Depending on preference, players can choose to use short-range, long-range, defensive or evasive play styles. Each system has its own range of gameplay features and players can choose to power up their favourite style for increased special attack abilities. - ED)

TVG: How much consideration has the team placed on the control of the weapons and what new facets and ideas have you added pertaining to this?

Lots. DMC is a game about Dante, and is all about his weapons. The new style system will allow players to utilise Danteâs weapons in new and cool ways. Special moves and combos will also feature heavily in this game.

TVG: We are told that the team may adopt a 2nd camera in the game.

The camera is always going be an issue. Especially with 3D action games, but of course we are going to try our best to develop a different kind of camera that doesnât leave the player disorientated or in a situation where he is getting damaged unfairly. This is one of our main objectives.

TVG: Is DMC3 using the same engine as in DMC2? What are new, big
Modifications?

Devil May Cry 3 is being created using a brand new engine. In order to make Devil May Cry 3 as good as we possibly can, we have spent a hell of a lot of time developing our new engine to help give some of the best effects you will ever see on the PS2. We are confident that this title will be the best Devil May Cry title yet.

TVG: Being a prequel what latitude does it give you to expand and add new ideas to the whole game and character/s? Can you tell us about a few that really extend and create a new vitality to the game?

Some people will say you are stuck following a fixed storyline. Others will tell you that just isnât so. I personally plan to develop the game with enough plot elements linking to DMC1 that the player feels like they are learning more about Dante yet still getting enough ânewâ story twists that they really enjoy the game. Actually if you ask me both DMC1 and 2 really didnât have all too deep of a story anyway. This one will.

TVG: What did you feel about the overall criticism towards DMC2; do you think that this hurt the image of the series in any way?

We tried toning down the difficulty level to make the game accessible to more users. While the sales were totally acceptable in North America and Europe, we didnât sell as many in Japan. It was a gamble that seemingly didnât pay off. However, with games starting to reach maturity you really have to try new ideas to be able to keep the consumer coming back for more. Some work. Some donât.

TVG: Could you please elaborate on the âstyleâ system employed in DMC3?

In the demo we prepared for E3, Dante can choose from 3 different fighting styles before the start of each mission. These styles are Gunslinger, Swordmaster and Trickster. Each style has its own individual merits and enables players to tailor their strengths to the challenge each new mission brings.

TVG: Could you please tell us a little about Lady and Arkham; what role do they play in the overall plotline of the series?

Sorry, I canât reveal that yet.

TVG: DMC is famed for its OTT boss encounters; what can fans expect from DMC3 on this level?

Players can expect even more wild boss battles in Devil May Cry 3. There will be a variety of bosses and they will be a lot harder to defeat this time round. In fact, Iâd say boss battles should feel closer to those experienced in DMC1.

TVG: Perhaps you could tell us about one of the coolest events featured in DMC3, one that will really make the fans go - wowâ¦

Can I say everything? Youâll have to wait for the game to come out to see whatâs in store for you in that department. Iâm confident that gamers will be really excited about this product. Dante is back to his cocky best and this time heâs going to kick ass.
