Selecting a chunk of history from WWII with the legendary Generals Montgomery facing Rommel during the epic and eventful North Africa campaign canât be a bad scenario for a real time tactical strategy game, nor can the fact that you can assume the upper hand from either the Axisâs or Allies perspective.
A good selection of diverse (in respect to this genre of game) missions are on offer and the nicest part, most will say, importantly is the fact that the game actually looks pretty neat with all the graphical details that you would expect from a game based on combat. Yes, splendid explosions, neat shadowing, detailed representational look of the country setting which is enchaned by a the usual topping â“ a modicum of realism.
Delve a little deeper and you will find the single player mode offers the kind of tactical aptitude that RTS would come to expect and all the interactive unit formations, tactical ânouseâ, you need to tap into and master are all served up with some extra topping of surprises.
Desert Rats offers a slick and easy to use interface and, with some of the strategic moves and tactics being pleasantly involved, it is a pleasure not to have to work too hard to execute actions and orders. The game itself offers nothing surprisingly new in terms of ideas although the presentation gives the game the kind of uplift that a number of other RTSs should take note of.
Desert Rats offers, in terms of management and tactical depth, an intuitive feel without guiding the player but some could easily say it is devoid of being really inspiring, although we would give this our thumbs up for being straight to the point, unpretentious and offering what it promises - a strat game with substance!
