In Dawn of War: Winter Assault, I wanted to provide the player with a whole new experience, something that was solidly integrated into the original Dawn of War gameplay, but which expanded upon it. The best way to do this was to bring a whole new race to the table. Adding a race was pretty much a no-brainer for us, the question of âwhich raceâ was the hot topic.
What finally solidified the decision for me was the fact that the Imperial Guard brings a unique gameplay experience. All of the other races in Dawn of War are very assault driven. They are played very fast, very âpush and conquerâ mentality. When playing the Imperial Guard, your experience is very different. Pushing out early with minimal troops and no leaders will usually lead to your destruction, but âbunkering upâ can lead to success in the long term. That in mind, all of the structures in the Imperial Guard tech tree have a very solid look to them, and most have weapon firing slits. These firing slits donât just serve an aesthetic value, any squads that are garrisoned inside of structures with these firing slits will be able to fire weapons mounted on the structure. Carefully managing this can give you a lot of devastating firepower with a great deal of coverage.
Something else that plays a pivotal role is the Command Squad. Where as other races have stand alone command units such as the Force Commander or Ork Warboss, the Imperial Guard have a squad made up of a number of different types of leaders. You get to choose which leaders are in this squad, giving you the ability to tailor your power squad to whatever role you need it to be. Need a fast moving, incredibly hard hitting melee combat squad? Reinforce Priests in there. Need a squad with a lot of variety of abilities that stand back and dole out punishment from afar? Psykers are your choice.
Tanks also play a big role in the Imperial Guard army, and I would be remiss if I didnât highlight the Baneblade. This tank has 11 guns on it, all of which kill just about anything that moves! Itâs almost as big as a city block, has an incredible range of fire on its bigger weapons, and some of the best armor in the game!
