A machine without a decent RPG is just plain sad, sadly for PS2 owners this was the case, well that was before Dark Cloud entered the arena.

Dark Cloud is an epic adventure that unfolds within the mysteries of fairytales and myths. Dark Cloud combines true RPG action with real-time strategy delivering a completely new gaming experience and raising the bar for role-playing adventure games in this next generation. Set in a vivid and inviting world, Dark Cloud delivers imaginative, vibrant and detailed gameplay complemented by a strong character-driven storyline and an innovative new feature, Georama.

The story begins with a rather unusual opening; an ancient evil has been unleashed in the form of a powerful Genie. The Genie (whoâs master is a war seeking general) rains destruction on what was once a peaceful and benevolent continent, bringing it to itâs knees in one fell swoop!

As the only survivor of the attack, your world is left pretty much ruined, poor guyâs not got much to live for, his house, mum, girlfriend and friends have all been blasted off the face of the planet. Well thatâs what you are believed into thinking. After a short sequence you learn that the master of all the powers; Earth, Fire, Wind, Water etc, saved the village just before it was destroyed, placing every item into a sphere and then transporting them to various locations around the continent. Dark Cloud introduces an innovative new gameplay mechanic, Georama, which challenges the player to build a customized world then interact within it in real-time. As you rebuild the worlds, life begins to flourish and unveils clues and pieces of the storyline as you progress through the adventure. Using your techniques you need to pick up the missing pieces and build the village once again, this time using your style and home DIY.

The game falls into a standard routine enter the dungeons which house lots of deadly enemies, find the missing pieces of your village, retrieve them and rebuild your village. The dungeons vary in size with the later levels being tougher. As you progress you will pick up a number of including magic, spells, weapons, treasure, Georama pieces, allies, vehicles, keys, and more. However the levels do become slightly tedious at times offering not much from the levels before. A nice addition to the game is the use of real-time weather and day/time display system; as the time of day changes, everything changes in the environment, including the interaction with NPCâs, environmental elements and other important events â“ all changing depending upon the time of day.

The combat system is good, proving a Zelda style âLock Onâ which allows you to target an enemy easily; you can then decide whether to use sheer force or a more magical approach. Certain enemies require a âDuelâ before you can destroy them, this requires you to press the buttons in order of how they appear on screen, changing the gameplay throughout the game at different stages.

The game boasts more than 50 hours of gameplay and more than 60 minutes of cinematic movies which introduce you to the elements of magic, action-adventure, strategy and real-time combat that is required throughout the game.
