Crash makes his debut on PS2, but will it live up to the expectations we have all come to expect?

Crash has returned once again for another adventure, this time however on the powerful PlayStation 2. Keeping the same platform and action elements of the million-selling PSone games, but using the PlayStation 2âs superior technology to create a larger more interactive game world. Will Crash keep us happy, or will it be a game to simply make a quick buck?

Once again seriesâ villain and Crashâs arch nemesis, Dr Cortex, is up to no good and is planning to use the power of the elements to raise a powerful Elemental Lord to kill Crash. Thus, Crash is thrown into a series of levels themed around Earth, Wind, Fire and Water, and most avoid contact with Cortexâs many cronies while collecting bonuses and using whatever comes to hand in order to reach the end of the level.

It was common sense that Crash would eventually make a move to the PlayStation 2, however the question floating around was in what style? Would Crashâs 2D Game mechanics be modified to a completely new 3D model like Mario 64 and Sonic Adventure, everyone in the industry was certainly hoping so. However the development team âTravellers Talesâ have kept close to the roots set by Naughty Dog, as the game plays almost identical to the previous games in the series. The only major difference is the improved graphical elements of the game, which I must admit look very refreshing.

The Levels range from small to large and are well designed, whilst you wonât get the opportunity to explore the game in full 3D, you can see that the developers have spent a lot of time on detail. The environments are colourful and very crisp, and the game runs at a consistent fast paced. Some of the levels are interesting, one of the earlier levels in the game puts Crash into a ball and you need to control him by rolling the ball around, the level is set in a Jungle and looks fantastic. If youâve been lucky enough to play Super Monkey Ball on the GameCube, this it the nearest thing youâre going to get like it.

Crash will know doubt sell millions just because of its name âCrashâ. However for gamers wanting something new, there really isnât very much to find here. The game is structured exactly like the original with Worlds split into Levels, of which each Level has three different Crystals to collect. Once you complete all the levels in each of the worldâs you are taken to the boss. Have we seen this all before? I think so! The game does contain a few new elements; Crash can tiptoe around levels (INSERT SARCASTIC JOKE), and he can now use even more vehicles including gyrocopters, jeeps and a scooter.
