We take a quick look at the latest Commandos title before its release later in the month...

The Commandos series has gone from strength to strength and made a name for the Spanish based Pyro Studios; so hopes are high for the return of Jerry and his fellow cohorts in âCommandos 3â.

As the series has moved on Pyro have managed to streamline and make the experience more accessible with each new iteration; the same can certainly be said for âCommandos 3â with a number of changes and enhancements to making âCommandos 3â much more enjoyable and certainly less frustrating then previous versions.

The game is set across three different campaigns set in Stalingrad, Normandy and Berlin; wisely realising that most gamers only chose a certain selection from the cast featured in âCommandos 2â, Pyro Studios have retired the sexy and seductive Natasha âLipsâ Nikochevski from service along with Whiskey the loyal guard dog. To make up for the decrease in squad numbers, all the remaining members can equip and use weapons along with driving a variety of vehicles as opposed to relying on those with the required skills.

A new feature is the ability to set your members aggressive and defensive stance, so players can easily guard and patrol certain areas whilst also allowing players to hide and set up ambushes.

The streamlined approach has been carried out throughout every aspect in the game, none more noticeable then the interface, which thankfully doesnât impede on the game as it did in previous versions.

A neat and impressive feature is the merging of level designs with environmental challenges, as such youâll notice a variety of situations that require you to use the environment to your advantage; one such example sees the enemy ambushing a town, however the trick is to blowing up the gates before they can get in. You can only interact with the environment at certain pre-set locations, however it certainly adds a new dimension to the series.

For the first time in the series other troops will join your elite group of commandos; whilst these grunts remain largely anonymous, each of them have a different skill that players have to take advantage of if they wish to progress further into the game.

Although the âCommandosâ games were originally intended for single-players, the series quickly found a home with strategy fans thanks to the ability to let multiple players embark on the game in a unique co-op feature. To this extent, Pyro Studios have included a range of dedicated multiplayer modes and functions to âCommandos 3â.

Taking place on the same maps as the single-player mode, the game now includes the traditional âDeathMatchâ, âTeam DeathMatchâ and âCapture the Flagâ multiplayer modes. To spice up the action, players can enable computer-controlled enemy characters to make things a little harder, whilst you can also enlist additional âgruntsâ in a similar process to the single-player mode.
