Chaos League - Hands On Mini Preview

We take a look at this intriguing blend of RTS/Sports with a little bit of violence...
Take one part American Football, take one part Command & Conquer; the resulting mix is the bizarre offering of Chaos League ā“ an interesting twist on the sports genre that plays closely to that of an RTS.
Essentially the game is based loosely around the rules of American Football; as such youāll have a Quarter-Back to take control of, linebackers and receivers. Featuring a cast of over 9 different races and over 70 different monsters, itās fair to say that the rulebook is thrown out of the window, which means youāll have to pull off any underhanded tactics possible to gain the upper hand whether that be through doping, corruption or hooliganism remains up to you.
Thereās a substantial amount of depth to Chaos League, players all have varying attributes whilst itās possible to make use of a wide variety of magic attacks and even entice the crowd to grant you special techniques.
However sadly the main stumbling block at this stage is the level of intuition, quite simply Chaos League is fundamentally an RTS, so you have to ensure youāre keeping an eye on all of your players and moving them manually. Itās too easy to get sucked in the trap of just concentrating on one player and watching in disbelief as the rest of your team sit around idly scratching their arses! The developers have desperately tried to make attempts to teach the process, through an extensive set of tutorials and the option to activate a turn-based mode that stops the game for 5 seconds during every āturnā; however this highlights another problem, sport titles are meant to be fluid and not stop-start-stop.
Thereās a great amount of things to love about Chaos League, particularly the management sections remind us fondly of the days spent securing our teams glory in Speedball 2; however weāve had extreme difficulties in adapting to the concept, and thereās only so many times you can get a ādrummingā before reaching for the power switch.
Itās certainly an intriguing mix and definitely has a feel of older games, those looking for something different should definitely keep an eye out ā“ we just wish they was some level of AI to control your fellow team-mates and stop them just sitting there.
