Eidos lifts the wraps and reveals all on the latest Championship Manager title...
Having split with the previous developers and creators of the Championship Manager franchise, Eidos displayed their determination to maintain the series legacy by establishing Beautiful Game Studios - a new development studio tasked with the sole purpose of creating new Champ Man titles.
In an extensive look at their first crack at the Champ Man franchise it has become apparent that the developers arenât the only things to change in âChampionship Manager 5â; those fearing a sudden departure shouldnât panic too much however, as Beautiful Game Studios have made a number of subtle changes to the formula so thankfully you wonât find yourself taking direct control of a player/manager in a full 3D match!
Firstly is the employment of Professional Football System, an established agency who provides crucial player information to a number of clubs throughout the world, including the likes of Real Madrid F.C.
Via these services, Beautiful Game Studios has a worldwide network of researchers covering over 50 leagues throughout the world at their fingertips; however it should be known that previous Championship Manager titles enjoyed similar stature through its unrivalled assistance from the fans.
That said itâs hard to take away from the impact that the PFS will bring to âChampionship Manager 5â; claiming to offer the single, most detailed and most accurate information resource on professional players and clubs, tracking such information as playersâ height, weight, favoured foot and even whether theyâre married or not.
With all this data it might be easy to get hopelessly lost, so itâs good to know that the developers have given strict guidelines by which to judge player attributes. Giving a crucial insight into the structure of the game, these attributes will be categorised as Technical, Physical, Intelligence and Temperament. Whilst these encompass the traditional player attributes including the likes of passing, pace and positioning, the Temperament trait will provide the random value needed in any data driven game, affecting a variety of aspects such as contract negotiations, media dealings and the relationship with the manager.
Naturally this is only the tip of the iceberg with regards to the complete set of data stored on each player, however it gives an indication of what to expect and an overview of some of the changes that lay in wait. In an apparent effort to simplify the experience, Beautiful Game Studios has confirmed that attributes will now be displayed as a percentage instead of the traditional maximum of 20.
Even a Champ Man fanatic would have to admit that Training was never implemented to full effect, with small changes resulting in haphazard effects on the team. Thankfully Beautiful Game has recognised this as a key area to enhance the series, however weâre slightly concerned that it may end up being a little âtooâ user-friendly.
Training schedules will apparently be easier to implement, and having worked alongside a respected Premiership Coach (any guesses?) BGS are confident that fans will gain a lot more from this system; for example, if you need to improve a playerâs defensive qualities, simply set an appropriate training schedule, and its effectiveness will be directly based upon the quality of your coach.
After the successful introduction in âChampionship Manager 4â the 2D match engine will return, however because Sports Interactive retain the rights to this alongside the database, BGS have had to start from scratch.
Utilising a âsimilar approachâ the match-engine is claimed to offer âa quicker, smootherâ experience. The match-engine will also offer the ability to watch matches in their full 90-minute entirety as opposed to the 64-minute abbreviations in âChampionship Manager 4â, whilst the purists will be glad to know the usual highlights and text-only modes are set to return.
Finally, minor enhancements to the Tactics system will result in more immediate effects during the match, whilst itâs also possible to add instructions for where to play the ball alongside making runs.
