Championship Manager finally arrives on a console, could this be the most dangerous videogame ever???

If any game can turn around the flagging support in Europe for the Xbox itâs this, forget your fancy 3D visuals, graphical effects and go back to a simple text based interface. The Championship Manager games are perhaps the only guaranteed sellers in the whole of the videogames industry, shifting millions of copies with every seasonal update.

Championship Manager 01/02 is a port of the title that arrived on the PC last year; that up until the Xbox, no other console had the hope of replicating. There simply wasnât the storage space or RAM to handle the thousands of player stats and data going on in an average CM season, thankfully those days are long gone, now we can play CM on a TV, a very dangerous prospect!!!

Fortunately Sports Interactive have done an excellent job of bringing the PC hit to the Xbox, numerous pitfalls could have plagued the conversion; sloppy controls, loading times, however for the main part Championship Manager 01/02 is an accurate port of a superb game.

If youâre new to the Championship Manager games you must be wondering why, take a look at the screens and youâll be forgiven for thinking the world has gone crazy. The truth is itâs hard to explain, simply put if youâre a football fan you have to give it a try. The Championship Manager games are all about realism, the key to any football management simulation. Youâre free to choose any team from any of the 26 playable leagues based around the world, England to Italy, Scotland to Brazil, right down to Plymouth Argyle from the Conference League. Your chosen club will then depict your challenge in the game, a mighty club like Manchester United will see Championship and European glory demands upon your shoulders, whilst smaller clubs will look to survival as their season challenge.

Youâre the manager and so have to make every decision on how to reach these demands; team selection, transfers, training, tactics, etc⦠Unlike other noddy football management simulations you donât have to worry about such trivial aspects as stadium developments, sponsors and how many hotdogs youâre going to sell, Championship Manager concentrates on the nitty gritty, and because of that itâs more addictive then crack!

Over 100,000 players feature in the game, not only with their own attributes and skills but also characteristics. So if a player doesnât like the way you set out the team heâll let you know, if a player doesnât like other members in the team it will place a massive problem on your efforts for success. Each of the players has dozens of different attributes that truly brings each individual one to life.

Add in how you handle the media, secret board meetings and how the weather effects your game and you have the most complex, realistic and addictive football management game known to man. No other game can touch this for itâs sheer addictive nature.

Thankfully the conversion from monitor to TV screen has been done as well as you could have hoped for, menu interfaces and text have been enlarged to make them easier on the eye, with a reworked on-screen layout. The analogue stick works like your mouse allowing you to navigate the screen quickly, whilst the on-screen keyboard features predictive text for common names â“ a very neat touch.

There are a few niggles; you can only play three leagues at the same time which detracts from the encompassing feeling present in the PC version. Also the database isnât as big as the PC version, so some of those young stars that you found may be missing. However these are only problems to the CM fanatic, those coming to CM for the first time wonât notice them at all.
