Blast Corps Review

This is how Rare got the N64 gamer's respect, as they pulled off a game never made before, that is totally original and puts the fun factor through the roof.

This game sounds stupid, but the excitement and fun is apparent all the time. From the great graphics, too nice sounds, and addition of many different vehicles, Blast Corps is a winner in the most original game ever made. It is probably one of the top games out for the N64 as well. Though with all the positives, there are a few bad parts of the game, but it isn't enough to bring this game down. Blast Corps is a good buy for just about every type of gamer.

Graphics: 9.1
Rare's graphics aren't spectacular, but they are made very well, especially the explosions. These hundreds of explosions that occur during the game look beautiful and lifelike, though I don't think have seen a bulldozer take down hundreds of buildings before. The fire and smoke is total eye candy, and the colors and textures used are amazing. The buildings, backgrounds, and vehicles are done to a little less extent, but still they look great as well. What amazed me was the detail on the main setup screen and options menu. Even in these places, the graphics were made using the N64's full capability. This is so much like Rare, making them a great developer. The graphic detail in this game is one of the most in any N64 game.
Music/Sound Effects: 9.0
I believe that the music and effects in this game are extraordinary. Once again, Rare makes a great game, compiling sensational tunes and effects enhancing the experience. DK Racing and Goldeneye (also made by Rare) contain some of the best music ever heard on a video game catridge as well. On Blast Corps, every level has a differnet type of up-beat tune, which I really enjoy. Now imagine the sound effects of blowing up buildings, and a nuclear bomb...it is so unbelievable to hear these sounds on an N64 game. The quality of the music is better than many CD's and PSX games. I am not joking, Rare has done it again with exceptional music proving once again, they enhance the gaming experience to the limits.
Control: 8.8
Control can become difficult in this game, as with each new vehicle comes a new controller setup. The analog stick also becomes difficult at times with certain vehicles, especially when stuck between buildings. Though, with some problems, the control turns out to be done well, but not great. These vehicles you are given can do many different moves to destroy every building in site. Some vehciles jump and do flips then landing on a building and destorying it. Some spin to destroy or speed burst into buildings etc etc. There are many methods for destroying which really adds for some fun in the control. Once you get the control configuration down, the game becomes extremely fun and exciting.
Replay/Gameplay Value: 9.0
Basically this game lasts a long time, but when passed, it won't be played for a while. Blast Corps has some 30 levels of excitement in which you need to destroy everything in site, so a nuclear bomb can get through without destroying the world. You travel to many places around the world, and clear the way for the bomb. If the bomb touches anything, and I mean anything, EXPLOSION, the level is over. This becomes frustrating as some levels have extreme difficulty. A couple weeks are needed to pass this game, so the gameplay is pretty good. Now multiplayer, or anything else special lowers this game a little bit. The one player mode is very fun, but multiplayer modes are needed. Also, the Rumble Pak was supposed to come out with this game, but it didn't. Imagine the extreme realism this game would have if it worked with the Rumble Pak. But for now, we will have to settle for no feel of blowing up buildings. Maybe Blast Corps 2 (which hasn't been announced yet), can be rumble pak compatible.
Overall: 9.0
With everything said, Blast Corps is a great game with a few flaws. The orginality is definately here, and the fun and excitement is also packed into this game. It is hard to say what type of gamer would like this game. I believe all gamers can enjoy this one. Blowing up buildings has never become so much fun before. The purpose and plot of this game is great, as they way it was though out was ingenius. A lot of credit must be given to Rare for their first N64 title, which turned out great.
