Another War Feature

Cenega maybe new but they certainly have some interesting titles. We sit down with the team and discuss Another War on the PC.
Cenega UK may be a new publisher but looking at their release schedule for the next year it certainly appears that they will be able to mix it with the big boys. Mirage, the team behind this RPG, has been developing games since 1989 and one internationally acclaimed title many may have heard of is Mortyr - a classic first-person shooter...
Another War, using WW2 as its backdrop, conjures up an enticing challenge, along with humour and invention. The fact the game will be on 4 CDs, the fourth of which is dedicated to in-game speech, makes us want to get our greasy little mitts on it now but Iām afraid we must wait a few months. Total Video Games were invited by the nice people in the UK to put some questions to the team in Poland.
What is the backdrop story to the game?
Another War is about a mercenary and adventurer living on his wits, who gets himself involved in a web of intrigue between world-powers whilst trying to save an old friend from a group of Nazis. The plot begins in a forgotten French village where the only signs of conflict are intermittent German patrols and Wehrmacht soldiers occupying the local bar. It ends in the hell of besieged Leningrad, where the hero discovers a secret project, jointly funded and administered by both Russians and Germans. Although the premise is to save your friend, it doesnāt follow that you only play as a single character: playing as a team is the only way to progress in this game. Puzzles, interaction, and action are a few of the ingredients we have placed within Another War!
Is the focus of the game on the tactical and combat side of things or is it on character development and solving of puzzles based around the levels that you visit?
Character development is the most important aspect of game play, but one cannot develop without combat. Puzzle solving is also important for advancing to new areas, but players might choose to focus on one area only, and there will never be a scarcity of enemies to fight with.
How is combat handled?
This is real-time combat. As you know, most of the weapons of the time were long range (no more swords!). As soon as you acquire some skills in using pistols, you will discover that you donāt need to chase your enemies anymore. You will find your squad mates will be more than happy to assist you with all kinds of weapons, and it is you who will try to act as a team. Specialise your friends, keep them healthy and armed and youāll dispatch lots of Nazis!
What variety of weapons will you be able to use?
All kinds of weapons from WWII that you can carry. From pistols and rifles to panzerfausts and grenades. All you need is to gain enough skills so that you are proficient in them. Oh, and make sure you donāt hurt yourself!
Can you use vehicles?
Actually, at the very beginning when you get to Annency your truck breaks down, so itās useless. You will deal with guerillas mostly and those guys didnāt use tanks. Moreover, youād rather be a wanderer than a driver. So the straightforward answer is no.
Will there be different weather effects and do these affect the game play?
There is rain and snow in different places around Europe, but it does not affect game play in any other way than limiting the visibility of enemies.
Will your performance during the missions affect the development of the plot?
Only in terms of character development and characteristics ā“ many puzzles and conversations are affected by a characterās intelligence, charisma and so on.
Are there any real life incidents that are behind the story or events in the game?
As the game takes action in the Second World War, the background is important to conjure up the right atmosphere, look and feel. We have spent a lot of time creating the right look and we believe we have got it just perfect... The whole story is fictitious but you will travel all over occupied Europe and you will sense the smell of war everywhere you go!
The game appears to place importance on the plot. So, how many characters can you interact with over the course of the game?
Yes, we definitely paid special attention to the plot: the key to creating an addictive game. There are about 100 characters with which to interact. You will never be short of things to think about and there is plenty to take in!
Does the lead character develop much over the course of the game and can you develop his attributes to suit your style of play?
The way you develop your hero significantly influences the style. (Donāt even dream about developing all abilities ā“ concentrate on one thing.)
How many different locations are there in the game and what kind of interaction with the landscape will we see?
There are about 60 maps, some of them are only a single screen, but most are pretty big. Landscape interaction is limited to destroying bunkers and such. It is the overall imagery of the game that stands out giving it a 40ās look. The variety of locations is tremendous from café to prison and plenty in-between!
What kind of graphical treats does the game engine supply us with?
We were not focusing on eye candy but on playability. We hope it pays off! Basically, there is nothing really special here, except maybe for the enormous number of different enemies you can encounter. Although we have gone for game play, the graphics are rich and interesting and we have kept to a good standard.
How long do you expect it to take to play through the game?
Our most experienced beta tester needed 20 hours to finish the game. And he is the one who knows most about it! We estimate that first playing of Another War will need more than 30 hours. And then youāll need to finish the game playing as the other characters.
Are the references in the game mainly historical or are there ānodsā to various television shows and films that have been produced about the war?
We here love British humour and there are hundreds of references to Monty Python and Allo Allo. Besides that Iām almost certain there are few WW2 comedies that people might notice within the game. In addition, there are references to The Great Escape, Indiana Jones, and some other films.
Is there a multi-player option?
No, actually not, since we paid special attention to the plot and playability. This is the first ever WWII RPG game, so it gave us an opportunity to make a completely unique story, but we were also limited to the historical events.
When can we expect to see the game on the shelves?
Another War is due in September
Well folks, Another War certainly has a different slant than most RPGs we have seen of late. Itās nice to see Eastern block developers thinking about the concept of the game and this will certainly appeal to us good old Brits. We are eagerly waiting to check out the review in a couple of months!
