The invasion of Earth has begun! The Triclops, a formidable race of aliens, have invaded the Earth with one simple plan: the eradication of all human life!

Ok so the plot may be your average 'Independance Day' material but hang on Alien Front Online is shaping up to be something very special indeed.

The game has been around for a long time it made an appearance at last year's E3 promising Dreamcast-to-Arcade connection, voice-chat and 8 player battles. This was one game to take the Dreamcast into the online era that Sega had been promising and then all went quiet. Thankfully the game is on for a May release and will feature ALL the features they promised.

Players either assume the roles of tank commanders, teaming up with other humans to stop the alien invaders, or become members of the elite alien Triclops Guard, controlling futuristic bio-mechs and attempting to extinguish any human scum that stand in the way.

Each side has a choice of three craft for you to pilot, on the human side is a battle-proven M1A1 Abrams, a speedy Merkava, or a hard-hitting M-109. Whilst the crafty aliens have got the choice of a two-leg walker, a four-leg spider walker or an anti-gravity hovercraft. All of the machines have different power-up's that include the likes of flamethrowers, grenade launchers, hellfire missiles, nuclear strikes, gravity balls, seeker wings, light swarms, meteor showers and more.

Once you've chosen your team and craft it's into the game, where you've got to shoot as many oposing enemy as possible, it's as simple as that. Thankfully it's easy to get to grips with which means you'll be into some intense battles straight away. The control of your craft is like that of a tank, you can rotate on the spot which means you can never get stuck and keeps the pace of the game flowing.

The game is made up of three collosal and complex levels; Washington DC, Tokyo and a Ruins area. Each level is made up of key monuments so you'll find the White House, Capitol Building, and Lincoln and Washington Monuments. However most of the place is covered in a purple goo that the aliens have decided to cover the towns in. Each map allows you to blast away at it, resulting in buildings being destroyed or secret areas being opened. There's almost too much action occuring in each level for you to cope, lasers fly past, human troops and cars litter the streets and aliens are at every turn you make, the action is definitely intense.

Now the clever parts come into play, for the first time you can play against (or with) people in the arcades whilst you're sitting at home with your dreamcast. The game supports upto 8 players and allows you to connect anyway possible. Alongside this is the ability to talk to other players during the game thanks to the grossly unused DC microphone, so you'll be able to help team-mates or taunt your enemies.

Besides these features Sega are promising the Dreamcast version will have new and exclusive vehicles for both U.S. Army and alien sides, new deathmatch maps, and a brand new story mode that will have unique objectives to accomplish.

Comments
This is shaping up to be a great action orientated game and bolsters Sega's testimony to online gaming. The frame-rate is fast, the action intense and there's nothing better then blowing up a few aliens.

Check out the Alien Front Site, it's nicely done in a Starship Troopers style of way.
