Cell-Shading is the key-word amongst Japanese developers at the moment, as Capcom`s Auto Modellista shows.
Capcom for last few years have concentrated mainly on fighting and survival horror games therefore when they unveiled Auto Modellista it was a refreshing change. Not only is the game based around racing and upgradeable cars, it incorporates the distinct cell shading technique popularised by Jet Set Radio. However Capcom have gone beyond three dimensional cartoon visuals as Auto Modellista uses the latest lighting and visual effects, giving the game a look and feel of its own. In times of realistic graphics used by Gran Turismo and Project Gotham, itās refreshing that Capcom have taken a different route into racing.
So far what Capcom have revealed about the game is severely limited, a visit to the official website confirms this, what we do know is that it will follow the Gran Turismo route of winning races, obtaining credit and allowing players to upgrade and customise their vehicles. You are not limited to one vehicle as you move up the rankings you can purchase bigger and better models. The cars themselves are based on real-life models such as the Nissan Skyline with the emphasis being placed on speed and looks. Donāt expect to be cruising around in a nice 1.3 litre car as this promises to be a game for the boy racer in us, more likely Ridge Racer than GT. One of the main features of the game is the level of customisation that you can use; given the visuals perhaps this was easier to implement than standard graphics. Whatever the reason you can expect to configure paint jobs, license plates, logos and much more besides.
Auto Modellista will be one of the first titles to take advantage of the Internet capabilities of the Playstation 2. Not only will players be able to race one another over the Internet, they will also be able to trade parts, increasing the distinctive look of their vehicles. What Capcom have planned is almost a virtual recreation of boy racer nights down at your local industrial estate. Players can meet up, chat, discuss designs, trade parts or battle one another on the track. The tracks themselves take place in Japan, if anyone has played a game from Genkiās Tokyo Racer or Namcoās Ridge Racer series then you will be on familiar ground.
